cheers lads.

Shaun will that be low enough? Its just that i see you can't lower the bottom spring platform anymore, hopefully it won't cause a problem.

s13eater 04-12-2006 12:38

if it causes a problem i'll just use 7 inch springs instead of 9 inch ones, they are only £30, so it won't break the bank, 6 inch threaded tube was all that rally design had, and to be honest, i don't think i would of been able to press the tube down any further, i was all on getting those on.

Excellent - They do look fantastic mate! - Don't forget yer ol' mate Den too once you've cracked it all please! :p

Seriously though, the thought of Coilovers on the Silvia is HIGHLY appealing... :)

s13eater 04-12-2006 13:14

don't worry den, as soon as i've sorted the spring height situation, then i'll start on some for you mate.:)

30psi 04-12-2006 13:15

I'd try to use S13 coilovers with S13 hubs if I was you.

This then opens up many brake options as well.

s13eater 04-12-2006 13:28

i think me and den should be ok with the z32 calipers for now, at a later date i'll get some bells made up, so that we can use larger front disc's.

30psi 04-12-2006 13:32

Oh, I was reading on SXOC that the S13 people use the Z32 calipers on the standard 22mm without the pistons popping out. Therefore no spacers are needed

EDIT - Swear filter amendment

s13eater 04-12-2006 14:18

thats good to know mart, but i was thinking more in the lines of using larger diameter disc's, mine feel great at the moment with zx calipers and i'll be putting the grooved disc's on as well, i've got the grooved ones on the rear and today i've fitted new front bearings and fitted the grooved disc's to the coilover set up, i've also bought new ball joints, so what i've done is use the lower arms off of blue one, so that i can get them sand blasted and painted, fit the ball joints, then i'll order the poly bushes for them, thats the only ones i ant got, so when it come to fitting, i'll have all the bits ready.

30psi 04-12-2006 14:22

Well the Z32 calipers are designed for 280mm discs. The S12's are 274mm, so there is little difference other than the thickness. The thickness will increase the time it takes for heat soak to effect the stopping potential.

s13eater 04-12-2006 14:50

i've ordered a set of 7 inch springs just in case, perhaps my 9 inch ones would be use to someone if they get hold of some longer tubes.

firstly, i would just like to say m8, they look fab, really impressed.

secondly, i see alot on here about s13 front legs, whats the deal with fitting these to the s12, doing the coilover conversion on the s12 legs as shaun has looks great, but it dont get around the biggest prob, front shocks, seem to be hard to get, and only std ones avail.

it would cost about the same to do coilover conv to s13 legs, but all the parts are available.

shaun, why didnt you go for s13 legs, just wondered if you had your reasons and what they are :D, i dont have much spare cash for my car, but when i do i want to make it worth while, suspension is one of its let downs atm.

tbh, i never thought of doing s13 coilovers, no need for what i need, theres plenty of wheels out there on 4 stud fitment that are good enough for me, z32 calipers fit and are good enough, kyb gas inserts are good enough for me and theres no hassle with the track rod ends , i'am only gonna be straight lining anyway, it should be good enough with full polly bushes.

umpkin 04-12-2006 19:28

can you still buy kyb gas inserts????

and s13s are same 4 stud fitment arent they, im sure i saw a set of s13 alloys on an s12

s13eater 04-12-2006 19:32

yep you can still buy them, they are same as 280zx inserts, oh i was thinking of the 5 stud ones.

umpkin 04-12-2006 19:57

any idea where from and what year 280zx, mine are fubbered, my main reason for s13 legs was coz of inserts, my springs are already uprated. just trying to weigh up pros and cons for the conversion.

do you have the kyb part numbers too, just been on the kyb webby, and they specify 2 diferent part nos for the 280zx and the s12, is it just luck they are the same?

s13eater 04-12-2006 20:59

the number on the insert is 365013 d126 kyb.

When you come to get the instrument panel I'll show you the Datsun coz the S13 coilovers are in. I reckon front coilovers with Z32 brakes will cost about £350-400. You should be able to find S13 fronts for about £200-250, and a set of Z32 discs and calipers for £150.

The issue with the homebrew coilovers is that you are running the KYB at the very bottom of its travel. With S13 ones, they're designed so the travel is correct, and therefore they wont bottom out. The height and preload adjustments are seperate on proper coilovers as well
