Thats a part of the loom that contains the 3 green relays I think
|
DIS-4 power transistor.
so i would have to swap the whole relais box?
And then hook it up to where de old single ignition coil used to be or something? Doesnt it just reinforce the signal for the coilpacks? |
I removed the engine loom from the S13. The I followed where the engine loom connects to the chassis loom, it goes from the left of the car inside the wings, under the slam panel through to the other side and to the box with the 3 green relays.
I then removed the wiring that wasn't needed in this loom to basically leave the 3 green relays and long wires that lead to the plugs that connect to the engine loom. The 3 green relays power up the ECU, the power transistor and the fuel pump if i remember rightly. You then need to work out which wires need permanent and switched power. Easily enough those wires are red and black, with a few red wires and a thin earth wire. There are some other nice to have things, like the starter signal wire (will help it start quicker) and getting the rev counter to work. |
dis-4
Yeah I im gonna get the relais box first,I know about the rev counter problem and the diode trick,I just gotta figure a lot of wires cause i have a LHD model and it seems that the colours dont match up to the guide. But atleast Ive got a non cat ca18det so atleast i wont have to worry about the lamba o2 sensor.
Il see how far I can come with it and il make some pics soon and post em up here . |
Found this on AUS12 site that GerryB posted about were to wire in what for novices like me
---The white plug by the ECU has the wires you need for these items ONLY!! * orange wire = start signal, goes to start wire at your s12 ignition plug * black wire = goes to earth * blue/black stripe wire = goes to s12 temp guage = temp signal. These are the only ones you use from the white plug!!-- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ---The other wires are from the plug by the Maf connector in RED -- Black / Pink stripe Fuel Pump Relay Red / Black stripe ECU Relay Red ECU Backup Power Black / Red & Blue / Red (Note: connect 2 wires to 1) Main Ignition Power Black / White stripe ECU Power Brown (to O2 sensor) O2 Sensor Power Any 12v switched source Yellow / Red stripe (or use the Diode to each Coil pack as suggested and take to the Silvia tacho) Tachometer signal http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ctor_wires.jpg |
If you follow that though you will wonder why there are a few red/black wires.
First time I followed it was when I wired up a T12. Ended up printing off the wiring diagram and following it from scratch. Then when I came to do it on my 910 I pretty much knew what was what and had it running very quickly. |
Found a pic of the mutliplug on US site under the air box to help
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pinConnS12.jpg |
starts 2 make sense
With all these pictures it starts to become a bit clearer.
Think im getting there but i wish someone would post up pics of where al the wires connect 2 the s12 loom but this is a lotta help aswell. But the relais box that with the 3 green relais that I pull out of the s13, can i just power it up straight from the battery? Hope to have it running in a couple of weeks |
got a new guide
found this guide on an american site : http://www.club-s12.org/forums/index...ca18det+wiring
Its got all the relais ,alternator and starter under dash plug, But nothing about where to hook the power transistor (or ignitor) up and the dropping resistor. |
the dropping resistor and ignitor had there own plugs on the S13 engine loom. Dont worry about them as when you plug in the rest of the engine plugs ie injectors/cas/afm etc you'll work out which ones.
|
I hope ur right
the igniter doesnt connect 2 my ca18det engine-ecu loom but its placed on a separate wirng loom that goes 2 the s13 chassis loom and runs 2 the green relais. I thougt i had a foulty wiring loom but its complete and isnt cut nowhere, 30PSI told me to wire it 2 the relais box with the 3 green relais,Im trying to do that but still trying 2 figure out how to do it correctly
|
Found the problem
Ive just found out thru the US site that europen left hand drives (I live in holland) Have that igniter and connected thru the main car harness instead of having a separate loom that connects to the engine harness.
Im thinking of ordering an loom from the UK, does annyone have a conplete DET harness left? |
Here I have the Instrument panel out
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B...2/IMGP5237.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-V...2/IMGP5236.JPG Which wire would I splice into to get the Rev counter working? https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1...2/IMGP5235.JPG Which wire is it I splice into at the Coil Pack side https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9...2/IMGP5253.JPG Is the blue black wire on the white block near the ECU the Temp Gauge wire? Should this be cut and extended to the ECU? Which PIN would it connect to in order to get the Temp Gauge working? https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-z...2/IMGP5247.JPG I'd like to thank Pukka for sorting this project out and getting it running just a few more jobs which my budget wouldn't run to with Jon, a bit of tidying and were ready for the shows this summer. |
Think I've found the info I need if someone can confirm I am right.
TACHO the 4 wires from the ignitor that go to the coilpacks are the ones you splice 4 diodes onto then join the "cathode" (striped) ends together and join them to one wire which you run to your tacho. There is a light green wire at the back of the tacho, which you cut and join to this wire. You have to remove the instrument panel to get at the connector that has the light green wire in it. in the pics above there is a light green wire on both plugs into the back of the instrument panel, is it the one on the right as you look at it? The stripe on the Diodes is towards the tacho, as the current will only flow in that direction. Someone on Club S12 has spliced in to the tach gauge signal wire, which is part of the S12 primary transistor wiring harness, down near the maf location. Where is this and which wire is it? TEMP GAUGE Find the blue/ black wire from the small white s13 plug. connect a wire to it, and run it up behind the instrument cluster. Next snip the purple/ white wire behind the cluster, which is the temp gauge signal wire, and connect the wire that you ran up to the cluster side of the purple/ white wire. |
I did it by tapping in to each ground wire that went to each coil and collated them together via the diodes to have the combined signal. Instead of tapping this in to the back of the instrument panel I used the original signal wire from the earth of the original coil. This was on a Datsun by the way but the principal should still be the same. On the S12 I think its the blue wire going to the coil that feeds the instrument, but check.

Got the Temp Gauge wired in and working like a dream:D
But I am stuck on the Tacho wiring. Wired the 4 Diodes together with the stripe toward the Tacho https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B...2/IMGP5263.JPG An here again from slightly further away showing the 4 seperate wires to be spliced into the coil packs https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z...2/IMGP5264.JPG This is the plug that plugs into the Ignitor with 4 wires coming off it Fig 1. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r...2/IMGP5268.JPG If you follow these wires through the loom they eventually end up at this plug. You can see them entering on the left hand side Fig 2. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-C...2/IMGP5265.JPG And again the same plug closer up Fig 3. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-E...2/IMGP5266.JPG These wires then come out of the other side of the plug in different colours (As Below) Which are the correct ones to splice into???? Fig 4. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--...2/IMGP5267.JPG I am completely lost trying to find the original blue signal wire from the original coil. Do I cut and join or Splice ??? Where is this??? If I dont use this original blue signal wire, is it the light green wire I should be using behind Tacho??? . |
Sorted the Rev counter, worked like a dream.
Started tidying the wiring up, moved the relays about 4 inches, one of the spades connectors came off and started to fizz the loom. Now back to square one. Not suffering the cost of sending it off again. Any help would be gratefully appreciated will post a pic of the relays for any info on wiring new ones back in. :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:( |
Oh no mate. Which relays is it, and I'll get you a picture tomorrow when i get to the car if someone doesnt beat me to it! At least you've worked out most of what goes where to the rest of the car loom now though
|
Here are the pictures of the Four Diodes Spliced into the ignitor plug wires that goes to the coil packs.

With regards the Relays This Is What I Have been left with.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--...2/IMGP5370.JPG And Again in a Diagram https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...5252023.10.gif . . Is This Below What I Should Have? If Pukka Could Clarify This that would be great https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-T...5252023.10.gif . |
I just used the original Three green relays with the wiring intact. It saves all the hassle of wiring it after market ones and you can follow the OE wiring diagram. Looking at yiur diagram it seems to fit the bill. You just have to make sure yoiu have the correct positive with IGN on as mine cut out after the key was released. How does it run ?
|
I thought if I replicate what is already there and just fill in the few missing frazzled bits it will be easier for me to get my head around.
Would I be right in thinking 10Amp inline fuses should be added in the wire direct from the battery, and inbetween each 30PIN and in the wire that runs to the fuel pump? as there are none present at all. It seemed to run fine (although a little lumpy) until I fizzed it. Is the link between Pin 30 and Pin 86 on the F relay correct??? Looking at the picture and the relays again on the car, there is no evidence of a wire link between them. Really need PUKKA to come on and let me know how he wired it, so I can Replicate it again.:poke . . |
All sorted, new relays bought from Maplins and wired in. Started first turn of the key.
The original relays were marked on the top "E" "I" "F" presumably for ECU, Injection, Fuel Pump Think these were wrong as the link between pin86 and pin30 was on the "E" relay. Going to get a 4x relay box and wire them in with inline fuses, to overt any future fire risks. This should be a stark reminder to us all when messing with wires to: Always, Always, Always disconnect the battery when working |
well done mate ;).
|
Ideal, I'm glad you sorted it, things like that can be a nightmare if you're really unlucky.
|
anyone near gatwick who could do the wiring for me? not for free obviously.
|
quick question, can i do a det conversion using a loom and ecu from a auto s13 into my manual s12?
or must it be a manual s13 it comes from |
Not sure on this one. Don't know if there are any differences.
I grabbed everything from a manual. Maybe the S13 Manual may give any differences, you can find them free online if you do a search. |
yes the loom will be fine
