Spencer 200SX Turbo ZX 09-10-2006 17:36

Hi,

I am new to this board and thanks for the heads up Dave (Wacomuk) on a UK forum for our S12's!

This is my import S12 which I bought in 1996. It came into the country via an airman from Lakenheath USAF base.

As it had lived it's life in California and Nevada before arriving in the UK, there was absolutely no rust anywhere on the car, and the origional sealing wax was still visible on the underside. It also came with a full service history including the origional bill of sale.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...352_3_full.jpg

These pics are a couple of years old, but I haven't changed anything since then, so it still looks the same.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...352_4_full.jpg
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...352_5_full.jpg

It has different rear lights and the US market Turbo scoop on the bonnet which one day I might get round to making functional.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...352_6_full.jpg
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...352_8_full.jpg

A couple of shots of the engine bay showing the 8 plug setup and the extra emissions junk on the inlet manifold. The later one shows my Blitz SS air filter too which sounds awesome.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...52_10_full.jpg

The interior is pretty much the same except for the steering wheel being on the wrong side lol, and it also has a digital dash, fuel trip computer and voice warning system.

Other standard features are electric mirrors, electric windows, air conditioning, cruise control, manual/removable sunroof, factory tinted windows, factory side skirts and factory fitted alarm with immobilisor (NATS), which has a habit of going off when you open the drivers door even though it isn't set lol.

Mods wise it is pretty much stock; It has a low mileage T2 on it which I got from Dave (WacomUK) a couple of years ago along with a 10psi actuator which I found out later. It also has a custom exhaust which runs from the manifold to a single rear silencer in a much straighter line than the origional!
I also put a Blitz SS air filter on it which I bought cheap from a freind; it was for an ST185 Celica GT4, but was almost a direct fit.

I think thats about it; I have had it 10 years this year, and so far it has only needed a new turbo and front calipers. The old turbo cracked badly around the wastegate flapper thingy lol.
I rewired a lot of the engine management system as it had issues when I bought it, but since then has been 100% reliable and loads of fun :)
It doesn't make huge power like a lot of the awesome motors on here, but it's definately well up on what it was origionally. The air filter and exhaust made a massive difference, possibly more so than usual due to ditching the cat which was in the middle section.

My plans for it which will probably be next summer now are to fit an intercooler (might even try top mount chargecooler if I can make one fit making the scoop functional as it would be different). It does have what we think is a 10psi actuator on it. The story behind that is after the new turbo went on, the led boost gauge would go straight up to +4 lights and then light up the last one which is red, so I borrowed a boost gauge from a friend and ran it for a couple of weeks and found it boosts between 8-9psi, but it is consistent. Would this be about right for a 10psi actuator? Definately no leaks in the wastegate line. The pop-up valve has never gone off, but I will remove it when I put on some kind of intercooler.

I also want to put a UK inlet manifold on to get rid of most of the emissions stuff. I could just blank off the EGR etc (it's already disabled), but might be easier and tidier to just swap them out and it will have a new manifold gasket then too.

I also want to put a UK cam in, as these are an upgrade to the US market spec. It doubt it will make a huge difference, but I am curious lol.

Then there is the suspension; I want to swap out the bushes for poly ones. The front ARB bushes are getting bad, so this might be done sooner rather than later. I also need to find better front struts, as mine are looking decidedly rusty. These were swapped with UK ones for some reason before I bought the car and have seen better days.

Anyway this looks like a great board with some awesome cars and nice to meet you all!

Spencer

Hi spencer glad you found it ok :welcome

PukkaSilvia 09-10-2006 18:32

that car is lovely  . Very jelous of the Digital dash. First one i have heard of in a s12 in the Uk. Welcome to S12oc.

Spencer 200SX Turbo ZX 09-10-2006 20:09

Thanks Dave :)

And thank you Pukka :) The digital dash is neat; It comes in handy to quieten annoying passengers (like my fionce lol) by switching it from MPH to KPH lol.

I have a couple of videos (a bit lame tho lol) of it which I will post up if youtube ever finishes processing them lol.

Ok, here is the first one. This was back in 2003 before the new exhaust etc. It's rather lame, but my fionce wanted to do this to show her friends back home the car she had been driving over here (yes, I let her drive it lol). Also before I put on about 4 extra stone in weight lol :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap14T2kA6DM

And this one was done after fitting the turbo, exhaust and air filter. The passenger videoing it is a very nervous passenger though, hence I am not pushing it very hard, but with sounds like this I don't have the radio on much :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAYTCasGvAA

One of these days I will do a good video lol. :)

was this the turbo you got off docwra? the one i sold him with 1500 miles on it

Spencer 200SX Turbo ZX 09-10-2006 21:35

Ahhh, yes you're right lol...I forgot it had come from him. Didn't he buy it for something but it wouldn't fit his car or something like that? Lol it's a long time ago now. It is a sweet turbo though and still had fresh paint when it went on the car :)

wacomuk 09-10-2006 21:49

yes i sold it to him for his lancia integrale but it did not fit so he sold it on

PukkaSilvia 09-10-2006 22:35

Its always good to see some vids. Thanks. Good commentary, shame it wasnt commentating something more interesting.....Perhaps shes hinting you should take it on the track :p ;)

FLEXXX 11-10-2006 15:28

loving the dash and the rear lights have you got a closer pic of the side skirts mate as im sure we didnt get them in the uk
nice car mate looks a real beauty

Spencer 200SX Turbo ZX 11-10-2006 17:52

Thanks :)

I don't have any close ups of the skirts on here, but I will take some tomorrow and post up. I think they only came on 84 and 85 turbo's in the USA as well; may even have been a optional factory option as there seems a lot of cars over there without them; well unless they fell off by now lol.

EDIT:Okay, here are a few pics. They are quite hard to take decent pics of but hopefully these show them okay. Note, the car badly needs a wash and wax lol.

Looks good indeed. I noticed that you have a few degs of negative camber on the front but probably zero on the rear. Why's that? I would expect the rear end to be a little tail happy although grippy in a straight line

The front camber seems to actually be a bit too little on the negative side atm, the front end is getting modded for next season with that in mind as well. There's a couple degrees of negative on the rear too and the setup is more understeery than tail happy on corner entry now. But from my and other people's experience the fastest setup is always a bit on the understeer side of balance. Just need to test MUCH more next year, on 2006 the gearbox was always broken between races so haven't really had a chance to work on the setups either. :)

30psi 17-10-2006 13:12

Ah ok, it looks like zero on the back, but thats probably from the excess on the front.

Do you have any probs under braking? ie lack of grip. I was running 3 degs on the front of my S12, and it was easy to lock the wheels up.

What sort of castor do you run on the front? More or less than standard?

silveR 17-10-2006 13:19

Very stable under braking, and can overbrake even some lighter cars sometimes so can't complain. And shitloads more caster than standard, no way you could drive that thing fast without a good power steering. Mine has a fully electrical one from a Corsa C :)

30psi 17-10-2006 13:22

So regarding the more castor do you prefer the stability that this provides? I would have thought less castor maybe better as it would make it more agile, although less likely to self centre. How hard was it to implement the electric power steering?

The caster indeed improves the stability and makes the car handle "like I want it to handle". Difficult to explain... Although you can't just point at one detail and rule the way a car handles because of a setup, it's a combination of everything starting from tire pressures and ending with the initial torque of the LSD. If the caster angle is decreased a lot the car becomes like a snake trying to go here and there all the time. Maybe suits someone's way of driving but indeed not mine :)

About the power steering, not that difficult compared to many other things, but then again the car was built around these parts after it was first completely dismanteled to pieces. One of the best features of the car it is, makes life very easy and features adjustment for steering feel as well.

Should I make a topic about the car, after all this is (or used to be) the photo topic... :D

30psi 17-10-2006 14:21

Oops didnt realise it was the photo thread

i've no idea mike, i don't know if anything will come off in 1 piece.i'd like it kitted, but i want it as light as possible, i think i'd loose lots of weight if i could get the bonnet done in fibreglass, well it will have to be done, as the turbo i'am using will come through the bonnet, so an extra bulge will have to appear done one side.i deffo want a front splitter on, as i've drove an unkitted one at over 130mph and the front end goes to light.
