manifold change

Having to change my manifold as it as a crack in it  and i'm not looking forward to it really but needs must.
Going to leave the turbo were it is and just get the manifold off on its own.
Ive got my mani and turbo gaskets sorted and the wd40 ready.
Had some expert advice off Shaun again as usual:) but Any more tips welcome.
Wish me luck as I've never had to do it before:(

Manifold removal

Watch you oil and water feedpipes to the turbo they can be a bit fragile if old. Apart from the fiddley nut at back of manifold it'll be easy !

northerner 06-09-2006 10:18

Is it the standard one ? If it is matey I would take off the tubby/manifold together as its less hassle and will take you alot less time

bigtim 06-09-2006 10:19

cheers dude,
thats why im going for the leave turbo were it is option and just take the manifold off.Spose ive got 4 shite nuts to turbo to fiddle with but it seams the better option.

Ill see how it goes.

s13eater 06-09-2006 10:29

tim, are you going to get your ass outside and do the job then lol, no use sat thinking about it :D .

PukkaSilvia 06-09-2006 11:34

your a lucky chap if you have lasted this long without ever having to remove it before

bigtim 06-09-2006 11:38

well its took about 40 mins and its nearly off,one bolt to go at the back on the bottom of the manifold:trout all turbo and other bolts are off,bit of a roll.
came in for a cuppa.

badgerboy 06-09-2006 13:16

Told you it was a fiddley bolt !
:D

30psi 06-09-2006 14:39

I got a special spanner for that pain in the arse nut

bigtim 06-09-2006 16:06

sorted, one bolt is looking dodgy as its not solidly tight and keeps turning which is a bummer:mad: its tight but wont lock tight and i can see the bolt coming out.
I guess this first pic is why the turbo gasket was blowing,or though this is at the back and the leak was at the front:rolleyes: gasket was in two.

This pic is why i changed the manifold in the first place as it was leaking out this crack on top,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/DSC00135.jpg
All off,oil is from dizzy seal which is on the agenda next
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/DSC00138.jpg
All done, dodgy bolt is top left as you can see its a bit longer, just hope all the others keep it in check.Doesn't seem to be blowing anywhere when i fired it up so fingers crossed.Biggest pain was getting the locking tabs done up:ghey one still needs doing.

Big thanks to Shaun for answering his phone every time i called :D and my 13 and 14mm stubby spanners which with out there help non of this would have been possible.:)

s13eater 06-09-2006 16:11

feckin hell tim, that manifold was well shagged, even the bit that i ported out of the one i sold you has cracked, i wonder where that ended up:eek:

bigtim 06-09-2006 16:22

Is that spose to be all the way across:eek:
It looks like the cracks are trying to meet up and snap the end off

s12Rob 06-09-2006 17:48

ive just had to do manifold gaskets on mine, what an arse to get that bottom back bolt out, 3 bolts stripped the thread in the head too. got done in the end tho.

blitz 15-08-2007 05:28

can some one please please explain how to remove and install that last manifold bolt? the one that's hidden by the turbo?

I'm running out of ideas and brought it to a garage and they're out of ideas too.

thanks in advance.

blitz 17-08-2007 00:51

thanks. it helps alot.

we face another problem. some one managed to use 17 mm nuts on the last set of mani bolts. so we're squeezing our brain trying to get 17 mm spanner in... :furious and stock exhaust is fused together to the down pipe :(

doski 17-08-2007 07:51

yea half spanners are the key, i now have a hole set of them for the fiddly jobs lol :)

blitz 18-08-2007 00:00

half a can of brake cleaner later, and few scraped knuckles we got it off. took all the lines off 1st so we can get to the bolt. we use super stubby wrench. thanks for all the help. later on the fun of putting it back together will get us cussing again.
