You're gonna have a problem there mate. The thread tubes aren't long enough. ie, you won't be able to lower it enough. You will have to make sure you weld the tube on lower down on the strut |
thats the only ones they had, they are 6 inch and the springs are 9 inch, what where the lengths of yours again ?
|
I think the threaded tubes are 9"
Best just to put the tube a bit lower on the strut. Won't be a problem though |
ok martin, but i've just measured the standard springs and they are 9 inch as well, if the threaded tubes are welded onto the very top, they still go 4 inch past where the standard spring sits.
|
Yeh but bear in mind that the new springs are stiffer and won't compress as much.
You might be ok, but just be careful. It won't harm you to do put the tubes lower down, you'd never use the top bit anyway |
i get ya, i was just thinking, i'll put them a tad lower anyway, so that i'am not welding near where the thread is on the inside of the strut, so it does'nt distort the threads, i also went for the 450lb springs, i noticed that bart on the s12org used these, plus the fj20 is a heafty lump:) .cheers for the help.
|
Will you be doing a 'how to'?

Im running 8 kg/mm on the front which is same as 447lb.
I'm expecting to get softer springs. You really will find it too hard on the front. Certainly will be a miss match as is probably at least twice the spring rate of the rear. |
i'll probley uprate the rears to coilovers and change to stiffer as well, that bart guy reckons his aint to harsh, but i'am thinking of the weight of the fj, its about 188kg.i've had solid mounts made for the fj and it sits it about 15mm lower with no clearance issues.
|
Just go careful when throwing the car down a slight bumpy B road. Bart doesn't have them in the US of A.
That spring rate is suitable for race tracks that almost perfectly smooth by the way. How much heavier is the FJ over the CA. Is it about 40kg? |

i think the ca is 118kg mart, i think either northener or wacomuk posted up somewhere, i could be wrong, i usually am lol.:D ,the mk2 they are going on is being used mostley for track and straight lineing, i think it will be undrivable for the town.

I was looking into getting some short (12" for arguments sake) fully adjustable coilovers from GAZ/Spax or tein, something along those lines and mounting them where the standard rear spring sits. Not sure if anyone has tried that yet or if anyone knows if/why it can't be done |
if you go on clubs12, then onto brakes and suspention, do a search for coilovers, it will come up with bart j, he's welded the threaded tube to a plate and fitted it to the rear suframe, where the originals fit, he's used springs like i'am using on the front, the fit in there.
|
Thats the same as how SE did it
|
Thanks mate :)
|
i ground a spring cup off today and tried to put a tube on, but there's no way it will go on, the tube is about 2 tenths of a mm to big, i was speaking to someone who's mate did his own conversion, he said that he had to heat the threaded tube up in the oven and leave the strut in the freezer overnite, any advise martin ?
|
Yehj I guess you could try that but getting the strut in the freezer takes the piss.
I would just grind the strut down a bit. Effectively a clean up |
i'll do it anyway and get some pics lol :D i may even thaw it out in time for sunday dinner;) .

it was a right bastid to get the tube on, knocked it on then it took 10 knocks on the floor to get it on 1/4 of an inch, its 6inch long so you can imagine how long it took me |
|
is it on all the way now:)
|
its on level with the top.
|
How much will this cost you in total?
What dampers are you using? |
they cost me £95 to the door, that was for both sides inc springs, i'am using the kyb's out of my blue s12, they are only a year old.
|
:D bargain; Maybe i will do the conversion then....

i'am going to try and get hold of some bigger discs b4 i put them on , if no one can match anything up,i'll just get some disc without the centers and get some bells made up.

You may have to use longer wheel studs though, depends on the discs and your wheel & nut combo |
i'll have a go, as i have a old z32 disc in the shed, cheers martin.

what i'am thinking is,looking at them side by side, the center of the z32 disc will need machining out about 6mm, this will allow the unbolted center of the s12 disc to be placed onto where the z32 stud holes are, then i can turn untill hopefully i find a undrilled space for all 4 holesto be drilled, then this will still mean that i'll need spacers for the calipers, but it could all go tits up, if it takes the calipers to close to the struts.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...12006001-1.jpgjust a pic and update of the finished items.
|
They look superb mate, how much they set you back?
|
£160 with vat and postage for the teins, £100 for both coilover kits and i've put new kyb's in
|
very sexy. Top work:cool:
