S12 coming back as my everyday car :D

I popped over to my parents house yesterday where my S12 is sitting on their drive (where it has stood since JAE) looking very sorry for itself.

For the past few years I've not used the S12 as a proper car because I've always had to come and go from work in one of the vans. These days the vans are kept at work so I've been using my Discovery for running about in.

So why run a Discovery that does about 25mpg when I could be running my S12 on LPG for less dollar??? Discovery can just be for towing.

Is there any way I can quieten the exhaust down without losing pefromance? Maybe a smaller tail pipe would look a bit more grown up too? And I'll remove the rear window sticker... :p

Just need a couple of grand to throw at it now to have the LPG conversion done, brakes replaced, problem with the rear wheels (noise/weird tyre wear), oh and a bit of spraying done!

Good plan?

whats happend to the locomotive (flying scotsman) idea ?:D

turbomike 20-09-2006 09:48

it ran out of steam:trout ,you could quiet it down by adding anougther smallish straight through silencer at the front as i guess you have just a rear silencer

If you're worried about loosing performance then why run it on Gas? You must be able to grab an old diesel for under a grand.... That'd save a few pennys too :)

Lengthen the tailpipe from the back box. longer tail outlet pipe=quieter exhaust tone according to my mate that desgns Jag exhaust sytsems. A couple mor einches should make an appreciable difference

RichardK 20-09-2006 10:44

LPG runs the same performance as petrol. It becomes dual fuel anyway which means you can select pertol or LPG.

Yeah I only have the 1 silencer at the moment with a 5" tail pipe. I might do something with that as it's a bit loud for everyday use.

:)

The 95 RON stuff? I've seen something about LPG with an octane rating of 110! I assume that's not at the pump though and it could be as low as 90!

RichardK 20-09-2006 12:43

At the end of the day, if I can do normal driving for 32p per litre (that's the current price here) and switch to Optimax if I want to go on the track, etc. then it's perfect. I don't need top performance to cruise along the B roads and sit in traffic!

Yes, I heard gas is 110RON as well.

FLEXXX 20-09-2006 13:32

to my knowledge its only a slight difference in power and you will cover the cost of the conversion as lpg is cheaper so the more milage you do the cost of the conversion is covered

JackieFan 20-09-2006 13:50

I was only thinking that the lower the RON the more likely Detonation or pre-ignition is, you may need to "de-tune" it a bit thus making it less fun when you do want to go for a burn. Taking a small step back can feel like a country mile when you're really used to something.

Seriously though, hat's off to you for doing it, you obviously really enjoy the car and want to find a way to use it all the time. It's not a route I'd consider but it doesn't mean I don't respect what you're doing. I didn't mean to come across like I was having a dig.

rich, stop being:ghey and if its to load, then put some ear plugs in:D

if your car is too loud i was told it was sign of an incorrectly adjusted volume control on the headunit

RichardK 20-09-2006 15:59

Ah yeh. I'll turn it down :p

PukkaSilvia 20-09-2006 20:35

Hows your clutch then?

RichardK 23-09-2006 16:07

Clutch is going to be done in a couple of weeks when Den (HINT HINT) finds out if his old (new) one will fit.

It's booked into the body shop in 2 weeks time to have a complete revamp. It's looked a bit tatty for the past couple of years so time for a partial re-spray and a few extra goodies to be fitted.

Silviagod reckons my awful tyre wear on the rear is down to badly worn bushes. This may account for the noise coming from the rear too? Only problem is I don't know what the bushes are so if anyone could answer that dumb question then please do!

In about 3-4 weeks from now it's off to have the LPG conversion.

:D

when my mate owned my car, he had both rear beam bushes go, that really badly wore the inside of his tyres, i.e he wore the inside of a brand new tyre in less than 3 weeks.

they also made a loud knock as he came off the throttle.

RichardK 23-09-2006 17:24

Ah could be then!

It's the inside of my tyres that go (as in the INSIDE where the 30psi is!) - from the exterior they look fine. Until suddenly they shred off the wheels whilst driving :(

PukkaSilvia 23-09-2006 19:27

mine do that but thats because i need to adjust my rear camber.

that sounds just like it, what the noise form the rear that you get???

the outside of his tyres were brand new too still had the spikeys on them, the inside was bald shiney tbh :D

northerner 23-09-2006 20:05

problem is you would be best doing the rear beam camber conversion whilst its off as I didn't when I replaced the bushes and the best camber the garage could get was -2* on either side. I basically have to back tyres every year or so but on the good side it grips real well!

umpkin 23-09-2006 20:40

mine has the rear beam decamber, so when these bushes go, it doubles the wear :(
