Clutch question

I need some help again :) , I think my clutch might be slipping as I felt the revs surge when I put my foot down on the A1 last ( I hope it might be wheelspin but I think its unlikely as i was in 5th gear doing 80 mph :D )
I'm on a tight budget so I used my old silvia pressure plate and a new 9" friction plate from a 200sx from Nissan. I'm thinking old clutch cover wont be strong enough , does anyone know if these should work together ok. Cheers

They do work together but wont hold as much as a full s13 clutch. What sort of power is at your flywheel?

i ran with a s13 exedy heavy duty clutch plate, with a standard cover for a bit as the cover i was intending to use was for a ka24 and dident quite line up on the dowels, it did slip every now and then but only when drifting and putting lots of strain on it, but now i'm using a s13 cover as well and it hasent slipped once yet:)

You think you're bad - I've just fitted a brand new clutch to my s12, and it slips like fcuk every time i floor it in 1st & 2nd. I'm a mechanic and fit clutches every day and i am puzzled.......

adzs12 10-12-2006 23:10

What clutch have you fitted?

Dez 11-12-2006 01:00

Standard s12 clutch kit. I was going to fit a race clutch but i want to put money into getting the bodywork sorted. The car was barely drivable so i decide to fit the standard one for the moment. Still can't understand whats wrong though. If i floor it, it's fine til about 3000rpm then - nothing. i have to back of the power to regain drive:mad:

adzs12 11-12-2006 01:00

Is the car standard?

Dez 11-12-2006 01:10

yeah as far i know. No obvious engine mods. Standard t2 turbo

adzs12 11-12-2006 01:12

 Hmm strange mate only thing i can think of is there grease or something on the friction plate but then again your a mechanic so im sure you would have made sure it was all clean and dry.

Dez 11-12-2006 01:22

yeah i definately didn't make mistake. You can even tell by the sound of it when it slips that it's bone dry. It's as though it can't take the power of the engine - but it's a standard engine - standard clutch should be fine.
I think i'll just pull it out again and use it to knock the sh*t out of the guy in my local motor factors.:furious
Thanks for your help anyway mate:)

adzs12 11-12-2006 01:28

No worries mate, can i ask what make the clutch is and how much you paid for it ?

datdrift 11-12-2006 12:59

only things i can think of are problems with the hydrolic system or maybe your flywheels got a few hotspots or is a bit cracked?

and my clutch had a bloody slip yesterday:mad: was dfiting right at the top end of 3rd tho, up a a indicated 100mph;) i think it was only due to one of the rear brakes binding for a bit due to some bits of tyre getting wrapped around the caliper/handbrake bit.....

I was visiting an ex nissan main dealer last week and he was clearing out some old stock and offered me a clutch from a std. nissan bluebird that he said would fit silvia's... maybe the parts guy gave you one of these ?

I think I have between 150 - 200 bhp i'm using a T25 turbo, i'm going to get it dyno'd and set up after christmas so i need to sort out the clutch really. From what you guys say the S13 pressure plate is better so I guess i need one of these. Are they expensive to buy new without an exchange unit  cheers

PukkaSilvia 12-12-2006 23:12

You can get an exedy/luk s13 clutch for 130 quid from any dealer or cheaper online. They will hold 250bhp fine. Theres no point putting any other clutch in there at that price unless you want to have over 250bhp and drive it like you stole it :D
