Anyone dismantled these driveshafts?
http://www.datman.co.uk/f/cvshafts.jpg
I'm wondering if anyone has dismantled these type of CV joint housings. I can only think they need hacking open? |
yeah mart, you have to cut them around the outer casing, they are the early mk1's, turbo mikes one i borrowed was like that.
But arent they then buggered afterwards?
Did you literally just cur 1mm behind the rubber boot, so it only damages the ring, or further over so its actually on the CV housing? |
Shaun? :)
no mart, you only cut around so it just breaks through:) .just a bit further back than that lip by the rubber mart.
I assume I'd have to buy a new rubber boot and ring to re-use it then?
the one that i took apart, was the one that i put the s13 end onto, then the other 1 like that, i gound the 8mm off, but i gave the 8mm one back to turbomike and used a mk2 shaft thats cos it was machined for the snap ring in the lathe and the mk2 one is'nt seal like the shitty mk1's,lol.
I wanted to inspect the shaft inside. The design of the early shafts is actually carried on from the 280zx and 910 series. They were running UJ's before that and obviously didnt think people would ever want to take them apart until in about 1986 someone used their brain and decided on the later version.
I saw a fekked early driveshaft and the spider assembly wasn't held in with circlips, the end of the driveshaft in 3 places was curled in to keep it secure. That was the hub end of the shaft, but I wonder if its the same on the diff end. |
diff end did have a circlip on it on the mk1 shafts that i had and you could get the spider off.
Ok cheers shaun. I'll wait until I get a doner shaft then.
what are you up to with the shafts ? are you doing another lsd for your bb?
The 910 has an R160 which is pathetic and won't take much power, so it makes sense to at least use an R200 VLSD.
The 280zx runs an R200 so I managed to get some shafts off one of those, but as you will guess I need 2 passenger shafts. Only got a pair so I have rebuilt the diff back to gay open diff and its all in with the shafts. I'm trying to get another shaft but want to have an idea what those crap early CV joints are like before spending the money. Unfortunately coz the 240Z and 260Z owners upgrade their diffs to the 280zx unit, the CV jointed shafts fetch up to £150 a pair. I paid £120 for the pair I got. I could get a shaft shortened properly but they apparantly don't withstand much power. Billet shafts are gonna be £300 each. If it ends up being expensive to use a VLSD I will just buy a Kaaz LSD from driftworks that works with open diff shafts. £585 though |
if i eventually was to use a kaaz diff, would'nt it fit with those shafts i have, or do i need different ones ?.
Well in your case I would buy the Kaaz diff that works with the VLSD shafts. If you look on driftworks, it shows 2 LSD's for the S13 to take care of the 2 sets of driveshafts.

 cheers.
