Mk1 or 2

I have none spare but there is a mk1 breaking on ebay, see ebay thread.

JackieFan 28-09-2007 12:43

MKI G-box is fine just make sure you get the prop with it

mr_turbo 28-09-2007 12:46

is that a 100% that a mk 1 box will fit?? obv if i use the prop??

just rung up its in scotland n he wants £125 for just the box er no

lmrdave 28-09-2007 15:03

Not got any decent box rebuilders near you??

mr_turbo 28-09-2007 16:34

yer but its taking it out n losing the car for a few days + i putin my s13 lump in soon so i only changin for peace of mind as the lay shaft is makin a lovery wining noise lol

Beany-s12 28-09-2007 20:31

the mk1 box isn't as strong as the mk2 so if ur putting decent power in it i'd stick to the mk2 one! i'm gettin 1 one off Jeff at GBH Motorsport, I'll ask him when he's in if he has another 1 spare!

wacomuk 28-09-2007 23:25

put a s13 box in

I think that's a bit of an old wives tale tbh, both Shauns old Blue cars box and the one in Jon's old MKI have had shnizzle kicked out of them buy 300+ BHP engines and they are still going strong. Every time I've seen people requesting a replacement box they are always MKII owners, including the one replaced in the Jackie/reaper MKII project car. Does anyone actually know of a MKI box that let go on someone?

S13 box is probably easier to get hold of, but it requires modification of the transmission tunnel and probably a some fiddling with the prop. If you're desperate then get what ever comes your way then have your spare rebuilt for peace of mind, drop the DET in and enjoy!! :D

Beany-s12 29-09-2007 08:06

my 1st mk1 ended up with a very noisey 1st 2nd and 3rd! my second mk1 box threw 2nd gear! maybe its just my gentle driving style :D

lmrdave 29-09-2007 08:23

I've done similar to a mk2 box aswell, all gearboxes die by my hands (or should I say feet):D

What ever you have if you abuse it it will die.

mr_turbo 29-09-2007 08:27

haha i done 2 corolla gti boxes a mr2 turbo boxs n now a silvia box lol well to be fair the mr2 and silvia were alreadi on the way out

lmrdave 29-09-2007 09:17

I've done more boxes than I care to remember remember!

I started off night rallying in an MG metro with a 4.1 diff, I destroy those gear boxes at an alarming rate, even blew the diff out of the casing once :D

JackieFan 29-09-2007 09:55

If your swinging on the gear leaver like a rock ape then even the best of them will give up over time  you might want to look out for an auto :p

I'm surprised 30psi hasn't got 15 of them in a garage somewhere ;)

mr_turbo 29-09-2007 12:19

I did have but struggled to sell them so gave some away, and I stripped the last one down for fun

thats what i have 3 of :D one is pooped so I'll pull it apart to see if anyhting can be uprated easily at some point

30psi 30-09-2007 01:41

Oh yeh I remember you got one of my gearboxes. I think I have a mk1 prop as well that could be used if someone could only get a mk1 box.

My first mk2 oddly had a mk1 box in it. Only downside to them really is the lack of short shifters available.

mr_turbo 01-10-2007 14:08

i dont get it has someone got 1 then? i got money waitin lol

30psi 01-10-2007 14:20

I have one actually, just remembered but its a bit fekked, with a whiny input bearing and a bit of a cruncher at times into 2nd or 3rd gear at 6,500rpm.

mr_turbo 01-10-2007 15:11

ive got a new bearing in my tool box hmmm mines stiff n always crunchy.. hmmm wot to do how much would u sell it for with the prop#??

dont the mk 1 box mount different to the mk2?
