Interior Light!!!!!!
mine used to work, i noticed the other day it no longer does :(
i have consulted the bible and it seems i have a time control unit that does all this, the bulb is fine as the light can be switched on, but when the doors are open (both sides do same) i dont get any lights in the door panels, nor the dash light, nor the interior light, it was last seen working when i was changing my headgasket a few weeks ago. does anyone have any ideas where this timer box is, or other thing that could be causing this, as my alarm works off this, and would rather it working. Cheers for any replies. |
I'd start by examining the switches are working correctly
|
both switches were working fine, i would hope that both switches wouldnt bugger up at the same time, but it is worth a check, and i shall have a look tomorrow :D
cheers |
sounds like a fuse to me, had very similar on my s13 a couple of times
|
cant see it being a fuse, as the light works when you switch it on, and its a switchable earth, with permo live.
not had a chance to check anything tonight coz i had to go out. |
Hiya,
The bible just says remove R.H. dash side cover to get to the time control unit  . It looks like it is next to the S.M.J. Don`t know if that helps at all ;) . Regards, Ian. |
hmm, after also reading the bible, im not sure my car has a timer box of tricks, as it says with it, when i close the drivers door, the interia light should delay on for a bit, then fade, like new focus's do. mine dont. so it must be a broken wire :(
|
you bastids lol, i've noticed my door lights don't work now, i'd never of thought of it if i ain't read this thread :1la
|
lol, prolly just both bulbs blown, so long as you interior light works.... :D
|
yep my interior light works.:)
|
Most mk2 s12's didnt even have the door card light function, They were merely there as reflectors
|
My s12 must be a "posh one" then  . Because the lights in my door cards do work :D . Or at least they did the last time I put a battery on her ;) .
Regards, Ian. |
my door cards have lights too, they worked up untill a few weeks ago, i know they have +12v coz i have little flashing LEDs in the top of the cards to look like alarm (previous owner put them on) and they still work, so i just gotta trace a break somewhere.
|
Good luck finding the break. Personally, I would rather change a gearbox than fault find electrics  . Wiring can be a real nightmare, I hate electrics....LOL.....
I`m pretty sure that the wires leading to the door card lights have a conduit though, so the break might be further back in the system. S13eater are your lights working now ? We must have jinxed them, with talikng about them :p ...LOL... Regards, Ian. |

Must learn to use a spell checker before posting ;) Regards, Ian. |
well seeing as none of the lights come on, it must be quite and early break, like beween both pin switchs and where it branches of to both doors the dash and the interior light.
i enjoy fault finding, tis a challenge tbh :D |
Tbh, I used to enjoy fiddling with the electrics on older cars, like my old Mk2 Escort. But more advanced motors seem to be a lot less accessible, talk about wiring spaghetti...LOL...
Hope you manage to sort it out :D . Regards, Ian. |
my car before this was a mk2 escort, was fun tbh, very simple with only 7 fuses for the whole car :D
plus relays for the spotlights and split charger (had a second Batt in the boot) http://www.umpkin.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/escort.jpg |
That brings back memories...LOL....
My Escort was the first car I bought at 18 (19 years ago  ). Really easy to work on the electrics, with the fuse box being under the bonnet :D . Mine was the estate version (cos I used to do mobile disco`s back then). I put a full x-pack body kit on her, handbuilt a full wooden dash and centre console, put in RS style black leather-look racing buckets, resprayed her black and diamond white and jacked up the back leaf springs to fit 12 inch wide tyres and capri ghia alloys on the front....LOL... She handled like a snake in the wet...LOL.... but I thought it was cool at the time ;) . I will have to see if I`ve got any photos knocking about. I did that much work on her, that after 4 years I sold her for the same price that I bought her for. Happy days...LOL.... Regards, Ian. |
lol, i had recaros in mine, and a comfy cortina rear seat sqeezed in, gave a bit more room for speakers in the back shelf with the seats being taller :D mine was a mobile disco hahahahhaahh, 5 speed box, that engine with the twin 45 webbers on and it was a 1600cc pinto with a rare 1300cc head with big valves (near the size of the 2ltr ones) on it, this bumped up the compression to 11:1, a piper rally cam allowed it to revved happily to 9500RPM sounded nice, but it became to much work to keep on the road, and shattered 2 RS2000 diffs, then i was offered the silvia.

They were superb cars at the time. Virtually everyone I knew had a Mk2 `scort. I had the 1300, which I had bored out to about 1440, with a big valve 1600 head and the twin webers too. I was quite proud of myself, cos I did all the head work on my Mum`s kitchen table...LOL.... and the car actually ran really well after I`d finished working on it (that was a surprise ;) ).
Also she had twin-tone air horns for scaring pedestrians  and a bus reversing alarm that I wired up to a separate circuit along with a set of spotlights. I used to do a one day a week course in Manchester and the traffic was a bloody nightmare coming home. One flick of a switch, the spots would flash on and off and the bus reversing alarm would sound, it did help to clear traffic out of the way ;) ...LOL.... They were pretty bullet-proof motors, cheap for parts (with a lot being interchangable), easy to work on and fairly cheap to run. What more could you ask for a first car  . Regards, Ian. P.s. I really must get some proper work done now, instead of thinking about my past motors....LOL.... |
The time control unit was not fitted to the UK Silvia. Both door switches connect together with a crimped insulated joint under the carpet behind the driver's seat and then head towards the front and the big connector that they call the Super Multiple Junction. If there has ever been dampness in the floor of the car the connection behind the drivers seat can corrode and both switches may stop working. The colour code for the wires is black with a red trace but there are more than one of the same colour. You will have to remove the lower front seatbelt anchorage point to lift the carpet and it may be easier to find it if you remove the driver's seat too.
|
i shall have a check of that when it stops raining in a month or 2 :D
ive not seen any water on the floor, but this info you gave, give me the starting point to all my checks, i had a quick look yest, but the wiring is so big and well hidden i wasnt sure where to start looking for the wires i wanted. Thanks for the info really appriciate it, it make it better when positions of stuff is pointed out, the manual dont help with this. |
Yeah the manual is good for the technical detail, but TBH, Haynes manuals tend to be better laid out, ie more photos etc ;) .
Shame they don`t do a Haynes manual for the s12, just for the bluebird. It would be cheaper too :p . Regards, Ian. |
