What type of oil in dampers?

Hi guys,

As some of you know I am in the process of converting a standard set of suspension legs into coilovers. I have got stuck & need help with identitying the type of oil that I need to put in the leg? what viscosity to use? I am sure this is crucial to the performance of the damper.

Any help is greatly apreciated.

Many thanks,
Hans.

yeah transmision fluid is good, thicker the oil the harder the damper will be :D

What about 5WT oil for motorbike forks? readily available I think.
Thanks for your help guys.
Hans.

How hard do you want it, I did the last silvia with gearbox oil and it was hard.
You can also overfill slightly to get them harder still.
Off the top of my head I think it's 280ml of fluid you need to put in.

Would that be the dampers on my car Dave?
If so anything you neglected to tell that you've done?

I used extra heavy motorbike fork oil in the end at £7.20 +vat for 1 litre(which is all you need). Also, yes you need to fill both the inner and outer tubes equally to about an inch from the top or you can't get the tops to screw back in. They are rock hard now and just the tyre seems to give.
The car should step out big time now!!!..... AWESOME!!!!:D
Many thanks for your advice guys.
Cheers, Hans.

Yes, Dom I think they were still on the car when I sold it.

Whats happened have they fallen apart or something?

No Dave the dampers are ok, the engines not to healthy as it won't start at the moment, just wondered what else you had done to it as you didn't tell me about the adjustable actuator or that you had blanked off the pop off valve, not that I'm complaining, but I don't want to do something to find you've already done it!:D

I'll send you a PM with what I can remember.

Sorry to hear the old girl isn't running, see used to run sweet as a nut, better than the one I have now.
