Car won't start
 

Started the car this morning and she fired straight off

Changed the exhaust for a 2.5 SS straight thru, and now won't fire.

Car tried to fire, but then cut out, and now it just won't fire at all.

I have fuel, and I have spark.

I have been advised that there is a possibility that the cambelt has jumped, screwing up all the timing.

Any advice on how to correctly check this please?

Sounds rather odd. 30PSI is the man to tell you how to check the cam belt. I'll be amazed if it has jumped though to be honest.

It actually sounds more as if it's flooded? Mind does that sometimes, if it doesn't fire first time, it floods itself.

When you fitted the exhaust, did you disrupt any air pipes? E.g. air intake, etc.

It hasn't jumped a tooth.

Chances are, as RK said it's flooded.

Get in to the right hand boot compartment and pull out the tray. Under there is 2 plugs. Disconnect the 4 wired flat plug to disconnect the fuel pump. Then try to start it and hopefully it will clean itself out a bit and then reconnect the pump.

One side of the belt does appear to be a little slack though

If it was flooded, would leaving it for a while allow time to evaporate, and thus it would start later. ???

I tried again half hour later and it still wouldn't fire

You don't want the pump to work, it will continue to flood the engine, so disconnect it to turn it off, but this has to be done from inside the boot.

or take out the fuel pump fuse and try drying the plugs

Taking out the fuel pump fuse will stop it sparking though. You need to try to burn off the old fuel so best just to disconnect the pump.

My mate flooded his so bad the only way to get it started was to tow it and get the engine spinning at 3k

Take out the plugs, dry them with kitchen paper, put them back in. Turn the engine over with the fuel pump disconnected.

I can cut my fuel pump off with one of the immobilisers but otherwise do as Martin said and unplug it.

S12's are brilliant at flooding themselves!!

when mine does that, i just take the water temp sensor off straight away and it fires up with a couple of turns.

Some good tips here for you. Here's a cuople more for you to check over, If fuel pump is on its way out then may not be enough pressure to fine spray the fuel into the cyls, so could just be dribbling in via injectors & flooding engine. Try getting a pressure check for the fuel, eaisy to do, happened to one of my s12s, however I was able to run, so long as it was on a flat road, any need for power & she would splutter & cut out. My S13's Fuel regualor, when it packed up, did the same & just wouldn't start, but I ve no heard of
S12 fuel regualors going.
You can dig out the ECU,(is located in the side pannel of the passenger footwell) & run a self diagnostic, which might point you in the right direction. newer ECU's have the fault codes written on the top of the box.
if the AFL(Air flow metre) is knackered, or has become disconnnected.
As has been said, if any of the air intake pipes, turbo to plenum chamber is disconected then def wont start.

Just a few for you to look into.

I went to try some of these ideas at the weekend, but my mate had decided to have a go for me and has stripped all the pulleys and belts off, so I'm just gonna leave him to it as I don't where he got up to.

haven't seen him this week to have a go at him - I hate it when people touch my stuff without asking. :trout

Does he know what he's doing? You can check the cam timing without doing things like that. Tell him to use a timing light next time :trout

Put the bits back on today, churned it over with the pump disconnected in the boot, as advised earlier.

Connected it up again, and she fired but not on all 4.

Figured the plugs would be all fouled up so swapped them out for a shiny new set and all is good again.

need to get a timing light on it now, as it has a dead-spot as you try to rev it. :(
