Clutch problem Help (again)

Hi sorry i know i am always on here asking for help but my engine just keep coming up with problems.

After all the help everyone on here has given me my engines starts and revs which is more than it was doing 6 weeks ago. Apart from her idle being a little low she seems ok, except, i have come across another problem.

when she is running you can't put her in gear, you press the clutch down but the gears won't go in. if she is switched off they will and if you have her up on axle stands she will run the wheels but if i put her in gear then start the car it takes of down my drive totally oblivious to the clutch being used?

Also has anyone got pics of where the clutch cable is? I can't find it?

Thanks again

Paul

Its a hydraulic clutch mate, no cable. The slave cylinder is mounted on the right of the bell housing, you'll see it if you get under the car. Ya can trace the pipes back from there. Ya prob dry of fluid.

northerner 12-06-2008 16:21

I bet you the clutch disc is stuck and as said the clutch slave or master cylinder is Fubar. My mates had a similar problem and we solve it by bleeding the system and pumping on the pedal afterwards to release it. Or try push it in gear to try and release it

Ok i'm new to hydraulic clutches, i have bled the air out the slave cylinder but it still doesn't work. The slave cylinder dust cover was full of fluid so i took it from the car and cleaned it and sealed the attching pipes but seemed to have built some vacuum in the dist cover its drawn all the air out of it? Does it sound like its bust? where can i get a new one? Any other suggestions are welcome.

when you say force it in gear you mean when its running with fluid in?

tractor-boy 12-06-2008 20:09

Ya can get a new one for nearly nothing from any decent motor factors.

Does the pedal feel either really heavy or really light when ya press it?

If the clutch disk is stuck try rocking the car backwards and forwards (as northerner says). You need to do this with the engine switched off and the car in third gear. I had to do this with my Dad`s old A40 last year after it had been stood for 12 months :( .

If the slave cylinder seals are shot, the pedal usually goes light or drops to the floor. If the piston in the cylinder is stuck, then the pedal is normally rock hard and can`t be pushed down.

Have you had the engine or gearbox out at all. Because the clutch may be mis-aligned.

Hope some of this may help :D .

Regards,
Ian.

I have ordered a new slave cylinder so should pick that up tomorrow i will try and rock the car in 3rd as well see if that helps

thanks again

I had that exact problem a good few months back, same symtoms, I just replaced it an it works perfectly fine.

Paul Smith 15-06-2008 14:39

will i have to bleed the clutch with the new slave fitted? hope this works

Paul Smith 15-06-2008 19:07

went to fit it and have broken the end of the copper pipe. Bloody typical.

Has anyone got one of these in good nick they are willing to part with? Or can make one on short notice? I don't really wanna buy a flaring kit for one pipe?

Paul Smith 26-06-2008 19:13

Ok finely got the copper pipe. fitted the pipe which is a brilliant fit.

Have now come across yet another problem. I am trying to bleed this clutch but every time the pedal goes down it stops and you have to pull it back up, is that normal?

If or am i doing it wrong or any suggestions.

Thanks again for your help so far

Paul

There should be a return spring at the top of the pedal, has it come off/broken?

northerner 27-06-2008 16:25

did the pedal stop when you are trying to bleed the system as it will do this. If not the most probably the spring at the top of the pedal sort of like a bow shape

kennyboy 27-06-2008 17:08

Return spring

Return spring has broken on mine and i just drilled the pedal and fitted a spring at the top been like that for years now lol, work though just a bit noisey and the pedal sits lower than the others but not by much.:D :D

Paul Smith 30-06-2008 15:58

yes it was doing this whilst trying to bleed the system, so its normal then. Will it do it all the way through the bleeding process or only untill all the air is gone?

I don't think the spring has gone because it does return sometimes and was returning before i tried bleeding the clutch.

JackieFan 30-06-2008 17:40

The clutch should return to "Normal" if there's nothing holding it to the floor.

Paul Smith 25-07-2008 18:30

ok got an update, i have got the new copper pipe and fitted it i have bled the clutch and yet she will still not go in to gear whilst running?

What could it be?

the clutch release bearing seized if so how do i loosen it?

or maybe the clutch slave isn't moving far enough although it looks good to me?

help again

thanks

paul
