my car wont start i need help??? :/
how do chaps, my car wont go
it turns over fine, good spark & fuel, it has a crank position sensor in the dizzy does'nt it? dont know if anyone is familer or known problom???? fuel pump is werrrrrrinnng away so i think thats ok, i have a walbro 255ltr per hour one on order anyway! what can i check? i'm a bit stuck but need to persevere & get her going! it was running fine i feel somat may have broken down in the system somewhere i have changed plugs & regapped them to just less than 1mm, new leads dizzy cap & rotor, fuel filter, it was running fine before changing these items but it was difficult to start, seemed as though fuel was'nt getting through or the spark was'nt igniting, but i've checked these & they seem ok, i have a multimeter to do other checks but i'm not sure where to start??????? any help is appreciated i have'nt ran the ecu self diagnose yet as i'm unsure how to do it |
|
if there are any things i should check let me know as i may have overlooked something! i'm off to by a timing gun tomorrow as i have'nt got one!
is there any way of testing the sensors with a multi meter or shall i just try the self diagnose's, could someone tell me how to do the self dianose as i have a vaugue idea but no manual |
Right chaps the car is now running but a bit on the rough side, i think the timing is out! i'm buying a timing gun 2moro so that can be sorted fairly easily!
trouble is it runs ok if a bit lumpy when warm but when starting from cold its rubbish it takes at least 5 minutes of cranking the engine over until it catches then it's like its missing on some cylinders then as the car warms up it smooths out but it takes at least 10-15mins of driving for it too feel normal-ish??? any ideas chaps |
try starting it with the water temp sensor disconnected.
|
funny you should say that! it started fine previously when the water temp sensor did'nt work & was'nt connected! now i've fixed it i'm having starting woes! whys that?
i'm going to do the self diagnostic on it 2moro |
water temp sensor makes it richer on cold start.
|
i'll give that a go! it was runnig quite good before the boost pip broke, then i fixed that & the temp sender, gave it a proper service of all service items & fluids & now have starting troubles, i gotta crack this & go for a spin with a full tank of fuel :D
i want to start fitting my new components intercooler/boost controller (new-one) 255ltr pump & a few other bits & give it a good velet inside & out! dear me! |
it seems to me that the choke/cold start is'nt working, what operates this & what do i do to correct it???????
where can i get a new temp sensor????? i tried taking thetemp sensor off & its made no differance to starting the car????????? |
starting issue
the choke on my car has never worked and i've never had any starting problems.you might have a vacuum leak.
|
i'm ill having starting troubles, i have a new temp sensor fitted (OE nissan part) i took the air regulator off & cleaned it & it did'nt help, when i removed it it was about 3mm open, it moves freely with a screwdriver, it says in the manual it can be tested off the car but i dont know how, i've heard it can be wired to work from a switch????? :/
i've changed my vac hose to the fuel regulator too as the old one was a bit hardend i have some silicone vac hose in the post to replace othe vac lines but mine seem ok its taking me 5minutes of cranking to get it going, then once warm it is'nt too bad, start fine once warm i've fitted a new dizzy cap too any ideas lads??? i need to sort it asap |
maybe all the cranking has worn out the battery by now...check the charge on it, and the distilled water in the battery too with a hydrometer...
also, if all the vacuum pipes are ok, are they definately connected to the right connections??? sure all the gaskets are ok, ie the engine isn't losing compression while cranking....? |
battery is good, vacume hose are all fitted correct & compressions are good, i'm havin mild thoughts of taking it to a garage which i dont really tend to do due to a small budget & i've not found one that is'nt a rip-of, where i live anyhow!!!
i'm going to redo the ecu diagnose's 2moro & see what it throughs up any way i can wire a switch to the air regulator/ficd thing! so i put a voltage to it to open it then turn it off to close it when the car is warm |
did you change the right temp sensor??? there are 2 on the s12 engine, one for the gauge (has one spade terminal) and one for the ecu (has 2 terminals in a plug)
just a thought. have you checked the cold start bit is working, im sure if you take it off, and look through the pipe holes you can see the bit that moves open and close. |
yep took the bit off that has that metal slide in & it moves freely! the air regulator, i have a spare ficd thingy too, the bit that the pipe from the intake to throttle bodie goes too, if that makes sence
i've just changed the 2 wire temp sensor & the spade end sender to no avail :? both new nissan parts i want to hit the car! |
have you checked to make sure that your inlet manifold and throttle body gaskets are intact?otherwise i would say try changing your distributor as they are the number 1 reason for starting problems on an s12.
|
what colour are the plugs?
|
right chaps i've checked the temp sensor & i had a broken wire& the coldstartd problom is still there, i've checked the resistances & all seems ok, the air regulaters i have are showing 60.4 ohms & opens & closes off the car at differing temps!
is it an ecu problom, when i can get it to start it does'nt fast idle (cold start) it just sits at 500rpm & wavers up to 750rpm then back down again? i've checked & double checked everythink i think, i've even ceaned up all my earths, the ecu has some dodgy wiring repairs so thats my next place to check but other than that i dont know what to do i've also got two good temp sensors, & 2 air regulators, a spare FICD & i've cleaned them up, i have a feeling a wire orsome wire have possibly broken/chafed or the ecu is faulty does the ecu come up on the self diagnose's if it has a fault???? |
look here for fault codes :D and how to check them.

an little update!
it still has this bloody cold start problom, i've checked the voltages on the temp sensor & its recieving 5volts, the air reg is recieving 12.43 volts what am i missing???? i've done a self diagnose on the ecu previous to voltage checks & i can get the ecu to stop flashing now???????? if anyone could pop by to help me for an hour to see if i've missed something i cant see my timing marks to well, 15 degrees is the 2nd dot from the right on the pully is'nt it??? & idle should be around 750-800rpm PM me if you have any idea's, i'm so stuck |
whats your location? needs updating in your profile matey
|
i'm in the midlands coventry so pretty central
i'll update my profile |
fixed it woo hoo! tune up then shes's ready to modify, dead chuffed
|
What was it in the end then?
|
i had a snapped wire in the engine loom, after doing some voltage/resistance testing i found it to be the wire that links the air regulater to the afm which is then to ecu "thumbs up"
my first car with efi i have fiddled with too! i'm into my minis in a big way which is so much simpler but i'm really happy to sort it! unfortunatly i've had to take my car to an exhaust place as my backbox rubber went pop! so new ones are being fitted at too slow a pace for my liking but hey! she's on the road! so i've fitted my psi boost gauge which it says i'm running 5lbs only??? but i'll be at santa pod soon (just going to check run what ya brung days are on) as i've reverted everythig back to factory spec apart from the exhaust & air filter so it'll be interesting to see what time i get befire i fit my MBC, intercooler, t25/t28, apexi afc etc etc so happy! the only thing is now i've had my first real drive of the car they are quite rolly polly :P good for traction off the line though! |
