What do i look out for

Hi ppl

Want to buy my first s12 but no nothing about them. So what would the best things to look out for on a one and is the a thread anywhere telling the spec and models?

I know i sound like a real dummy but i really have no clue about the s12

there was a thread on sxoc recently about what to look out for, and as for specs/models most come with the ca18et 1.8 single ohc turbo, but a few early ones came with the 2 litre dohc fj20e.
and things like power steering/elec windows/elec mirrors/sunroof/central locking were optional extras.....
after f reg or summit they were facelifted and called the mk2, revisions included bigger front & rear bumpers, different gearbox and different front grille, etc:)

Did the 2 litre dohc fj20e come with a turbo because the one i'm after is the turbo model

Thanks
Gary

not over here, in japan they relesed the fj20et 2 litre turbo.
but if you are after the turbo its the 1.8, farly easy to get 200bhp and light and compact:) you would be lucky to come accross a 2.0 anyway, as they are fairly rare:)

Check the following....

Sills for rust
bottom of the wings under the mudflaps for rust
Check that the rear brakes are not siezed
that the indicator stalk is working correctly/Both flip up lights are working
there are no manifold to head studs missing or that the gaskets are blowing
Listen for gearbox 'whining'
Check the fuel tank for leaks
The rear boot lid struts hold the boot lid up
Play in the windscreen wiper mechanism
check the engine for excessive rocker/crankcase pressure. remove oil cap while engine is at idle. it should not drop more than 150/200rpm

While test driving check the clutch bite, gearbox sycromesh is smooth and the turbo is operating properly with no smoke on gearchange/under boost. Also check that there is decent oil pressure

Standard the turbo is set at around 6psi and oil pressure should be at around 40psi at 2000rpm

Thanks a lot mate I'll keep all that in mind:)

What does this test is for?

Worn piston rings

datdrift 06-03-2006 16:26

as we are on the subject:) is there any advantage of fitting a crankcase breather filter on the rocker cover, and blanking off where it goes to the intake duct, or is it better left as it is????

adzs12 06-03-2006 16:40

It is beneficial but it will idle like a dog if your rings are worn:rolleyes:

datdrift 06-03-2006 16:53

well ive pulled the oil cap off with it running before and it doesent seem to blow out too much, dident notice it change the idle either, its done 98K and seems alright:) i'll get one if theres one on ebay cheap;)

mebbe a good idea to check the front wheel arches for rust too.. the wings are quite thin
