installing headlamp grilles
To those who know how to do this, could you tell me where to bolt the two pieces of metal up? I got a headlamp assembly and started working on it but they didnt match up where I had in mind and I dont know which is to go where seeing that they are slightly angled and of different design.
Cheers. |
you need the mk1 headlamp assembly and lamps.
|
That I do. I have a set of MKI and MKII head lamps. But where exactly do they bolt onto? I thought they bolted onto the outside of the housing but it is way too small. Like it goes on either side of the actual sealed bulb and bolts into some place inside.
|
Okay, here is the only picture I have to go from. As of now, I do not know where to align the grilles to bolt into the headlamps. I'm almost wondering if my headlamps are different. That would be really annoying. If someone could take some pics, it would be really helpful.

light grilles
been looking at this too sinse i have mine stripped at mo and looks like you have to drill out the pop rivets holding the sealed beam cup to the housing and use them as the fixing points, bolting on the inside of housing like you said...;)
going to have a go making some i think... |
i have them fitted to mine as standard, if you dont mind a small wait ill see if i can get out and have a look, might have to be the weekend, as i go to work in the dark, and come home in the dark, so all round its dark, lol.
|
nice 1 cheerz man.
|
Yeah, that would be great! I have been looking at what I have with the hardware and have been confused as to exactly how they are to mount in. I've just waited as it's not been high on the priority list but pics would def. help and I can get on it and have them finished before my swap is.
|
mk1 1 and mk2 headlamps are different.
|
Ah ok. Well I have a set of MKI and MKII head lamp housings, so if needs be I'll swap over but even then, I cannot figure out how the two are different and where to mount them.
|
the covers are different too.:)
|
Wait a minute... :p You guys poking fun at me? lol How is the cover any different? I am basing my information off of what I've seen and have of MKI and MII setups. I wonder if you Euros have different setups.
|
i'am sure mk1's and mk2's are slightly different, i'll check later as i have both.
|
ok, i finally got outside to take some pics, my surrounds have little cut out in them and the grille ends poke through, and the screw just a bit further back is what secures them on, you will see one side of mine is cracked :(, still seem secure enuf.
let me know if you need any more. http://www.umpkin.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/grille1.JPG http://www.umpkin.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/grille2.JPG http://www.umpkin.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/grille3.JPG http://www.umpkin.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/grille4.JPG |
Those pics are just what I needed. The only thing I could ask for is someone to take a pic of the headlamp without the bars and the surrounds so I can make sure that they are still the same setup as what I have over here. Otherwise, I guess I'll be looking to purchase a spare set of those headlamp surrounds if anyone has some.
quick edit: the guy I bought the headlamp grilles from also gave me some screws. Four are a bit long and two are shallow. I am wondering if the ones that hold them into place are really that long by chance and if they are, what side is the long and short. Looking at the picture, I would assume they have to be shallow based on the spacing of everything. Arg, almost need to see a spare set of these torn a part or just buy a whole assembly. |
If anyone has any spare time or is willing, if someone can take a picture of a headlamp setup after the grilles and the black surrounds are unbolted, that would be great. Just one would be fine. I want to see how much different the headlamp unit is to mine or if it's just the black surround that I'm looking at obtaining. Thanks.

I figured since I had free time, I would take a part my spare headlamp unit so you can see and it would be easier for you to tell me what is different.
Here is the headlamp unit without the plastic covers on the sides the metal cover on the top. This would be the RH headlamp unit. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...eadlamp001.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...eadlamp002.jpg Note the key difference is that you have a black metal piece that the grilles bolt into. For us, we lack that but have a silver metal surrounding holding the headlamp into place. This is the metal surround by itself. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...eadlamp003.jpg Then what it looks like for the headlamp unit without the metal surround holding the headlamp itself in place. With the metal piece off, you can easily pull the headlamp out and it is left with the metal housing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...eadlamp004.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...eadlamp005.jpg Thank you for the help. Edit: Hey Umpkin, willing to sell/trade your headlight setup? I'll send you the metal pieces I have in addition. :p |

sup, my lights are set up the same as yours drac, i'm making some grills but i'm returning back to the pop rivets on the main housing and replacing them with nuts n bolts the grilles welded to the nut then bolting them up. you can see the rivets on the first pic of your right side...got 1 nearly done...looks good. hope the pics help. |
I may have to look into that if I cannot find the stock replacements. Not too bad.
|
should look cool, will try to get 1 finnished so you can get a better look bud.
will get some pics with it out too. |
headlamp/ safari grilles
sup made some grilles for meh ride, kept the bars on the directional lines on the lens thats why the bottom 1 seems lower than normal.
just lobbed them on to take a few pics so still need a bit of fine tuning and my drivers side light sags due to rusted through fixings... they unbolt for access to lights. anyway, got more pics if you need them bud. http://i937.photobucket.com/albums/a...a/DSC01182.jpg |
