probloms my rear calipers are binding whats the usual suspects?
probloms my rear calipers are binding whats the usual suspects? also one rear caliper bolt is tight as tuppence! i was undoing them to change the pads & one wont undooo grrrr or willl i need a set of good second-hand calipers
|
overtime the pistons seized against the caliper body and the seals. You can get the pistons out and if they are not damage/pitted etc you can get away with cleaning them up and popping them back in. if not then refurbs are £100 a side
|
I had this problem with a mondeo yesterday. Only way to know for sure is to back-off & disconnect the handbrake and check all the parts invidually. Check to see if the actuator on the rear of the caliper isn't seized. Then check to see if the caliper slides are free moving, the piston in the caliper and the pads in the carrier.
If it's all free you're looking at a handbrake cable. |
yeah as above. Sometimes just the handbrake mechanism on the caliper can sieze. I will have a pair of calipers by the end of the week. I will need to check them b4 i ok them
|
mine has done this a few times, first time is was a seized handbrake cable, and the last couple was the actual mechanism, i just squirted the lever the cable connects to with a little WD40, and has been fine since.
|
the wheels are binding to turn when its jacked up with the handbrake off, gonna investigate the handbrake mech! i think it could be that! i fookin hope so :/
i'm giving my silvia a little refurb whilst i'm at it, i'll get some pics, i'm doing the sills as they are grotty on the outside but when i cut the outer sill away inside is mint :/ strange but i have new sills to weld on front wings are frilly but i have steel to fix them so aslong as i can sort the brakes i'll be on my way to a new MOT |
out of interest, where'd you get the new sills? how much? mine needs some work for the mot, if the sills aren't silly money i might just replace :)
|
I can probaby get some sent out to you if you call me at work

rear brake probs and others, mild silvia refurb!
my sills are actually from a nissan micra & fit ok, i just bent then a bit more over a scaffold bar & they a perfect fit!
once i have finished the sills this week coming (i've cut them off & prepped it ready) i'll tackle the brakes the brakes are my big worry really, i've soaked them in wd-40 & i'll keep doning it until i i get around to make a start on them, done some little modifications in the looks department like painting all the chrome bits matt black as i thought the chrome looked out of place for the age of the car????? i feel it looks far better! i'm going to loer the front of mine more to give it a little rake! at the moment its lowered about 70-80mm but it sits level! so the front may go to 100mm, i have some cool rims in 14" but they dont clear the rear calipers, is it ok to fit longer studs n spacer, how do the rear studs come out? |
what year micra are they from??? i have a 93-94 bubble shape and they dont look anything like my s12 sills.
|
bloody hell, how are you lowering it that much? with a grinder?:p
|
the ghetto grinder is the only way on a street car, i dont use tha car that much at the moment due to fuel costs but i am using cut springs as it rides smooth still & looks cool & my lil mini race car is enough bumpyness for me LOL
how do i remove the hubs to change to longer studs as i found some good spacers which should allow enough clearance for my 14" rims, any whoo i have gone of topic a bit i'm doing the brakes on my silvia this week, i have the calipers partly off, but i have to refit them to unbolt the handbrake mech, a 14mm one, & i have to slacken the hand brake, where is the adjuster? the springs etc on the rear caliper are moving freely now how far can i pump the pistons out? i dont want to remove them i'd like to pump them out a little to see if they are pitted, the drivers side rear is fine the passenger is a lil suspect the carriers i have cleaned up with a wire brush on a drill & painted them matt black, as with the bolts! bolts are covered in copperease grease! i have new pads for the back replaced the fronts & once i've done the rears i'll bleed the fluid through as its probobly due a a change binding or siezed brakes are a pain in the arse! but....... i want to get her on the road with a fresh MOT cool blummin car ya know! lpg in this thing would be nice if i had the funds, we'll see |
sound like quite a busy time your having lol, i keep looking at mine, thinking i need to do this and that, but never have the time, hopefully summer evenings will help.
also you never answered my question above, about the year of the micra you used for the sills, i have one side that needs attention now. Cheers. Jamie. |
yep ya right umpkin!
if i remeber correctly i think they are 94-onwards, i'll check the sticker if its still readable tomorrow! i'm tinkering again! i think i may have to get a caliper rebuild kit, the seals piston etc etc for the passenger side rear! brakeparts.co.uk i think, i'll get pics tomorrow too |
