fresh s12 owner
alrite peeps
I'm purchasing my first jap car (cannie wait!!), Its a 1989 nissan silvia s12 its a 1800 turbo automatic, and im looking for some information on these cars so i know if the 1 im getting is in worth it. Its done 71,000 miles. Its been resprayed in the same colour of red. Its rust free and the underside has been undersealed. Its had its timing belt tightend. Its has an electric fan fitted. Its been lowered slightly. A reasonably new exhaust. New bushes. Electric fan. Plus the usual bits and pieces Serviced regularly etc etc And has been maintend to a excellent standard so good its been garage for 10 years and hasnt been on the to road since 2005! think of it as a 1:1 scale model lol. Is there anything i should look out for with these cars? i dont want to end up with a shed and from what i can see its pretty minted the asking price the guys want £1500 + cost of a m.o.t. I no alot of them are prone to rust in usual areas sills and arches. There is no rust under the spoiler as it was removed for it getting painted and replaced with an old skool supra spoiler not too big tho just enough to suit it. I also have a few questions on this car as well, they are as follows.. 1.What is the PCD on the wheels is it 114.3 X 4 ? 2. I have told by a resonably good source that the car should run on unleaded or super unleaded (super contains a higher octaine rating) the current owner has been putting in a additive (red X) into it tho coz he claims itll only run on leaded fuel and it seems to run fine with red X in system but i dont wanna put super unleaded into it incase it burns all the valve seats. What should i run the car on? Thanks in advance guys P.S Ill get pics up as soon as i get it :D |
Hey look new blood! :p
Lol hey dude. Car sounds nice. Alot of money for an S12 but that's subjective ofcourse. 1) Yes 114.3 same as S13 200SX/Silvia 2) That's ridiculous. S12s and Bluebird Turbos should have 97 RON Unleaded. Leaded doesn't even come into it. I used both 97, or 95 RON when I was feeling tight, and never had any issues. No pinking or anything |
Cheers dude itll be run on super unleaded anyway im used to paying through the nose for it thats wat i ran my '68 beetle on and my current car bmw 323i so itll be run on the super :) thanks for the info.
I thought it was a tad expensive for one but i was shocked at how well this car looks for a 89. The current owners been working for a nissan parts department for fooking ages so everything that needed replaced was replaced. Hopfully it passes it m.o.t going sometime this week fingers crossed :) Look forward to absorbing all the information i can off anyone willing to lend my there input :). M.T |
You might as well pour horse piss in your tank as add redex,it does absolutely nothing.I never had a problem with 95 ron.
Why didn't it have the timing belt replaced, not tightened?I't is a cheap and handy job to do on an s12 mind you. Lift the tailgate up and check for rust around the hinges. |
wouldn't mind seeing your supra spoiler btw ;)
|
I bought an s12 engine once before and was told the same thing about the fuel.It would only run rite on 98 ron+.
I replaced the fuel pressure regulator with another spare one i had and it cured it. Try holding out and getting a manual s12 rather than Auto |
Well guys it passed its m.o.t the day with no work needing done. :)
The spoiler was a absoulte b@5tard to find apparently :S looks good tho. Ill get some pics. The only thing is its having idleing problems prob down to the fact hes put that additive into it! He says the fuel pumps sticking so ill take it out and clean it up or replace it (are they expensive?), Drain the tank of its shite fuel and top it up with V power. hopfully that'll fix it ...Hopfully! As for the gearbox im only getting it in an auto coz its for sale and ive got the cash to buy it i was never out looking for a silvia was just a car a guy was selling in work. My dad knows a hes got a manual box sitting taking up space so i might get it and convert it. Would it be worth my while doing so? M.T |

The only rust on the car is on the rear drivers arch bout the size of a brass pin head. M.T |

Yeah,I'd just get a manual.Changing from auto to manual would be a pain in the hole.
|
Hmmmm well its pretty much mine its just a daily driver for me anyway.
Even if I run it for a year and c how it goes. What's the problem with it being an auto, or is it just better to have a manual coz its a manual? M.T |
Buying a manual is far better than buying an auto and converting. If you like the auto I would keep it as it is, unless you want to go mad and rip the whole car apart - which I do and several here are already doing lol. :D
Anyway, piccys or it didn't happen. |
I quite like idea of it bein an auto coz am lazy lol
ill try and get pics sorted the now then. But ave only got the 1s I took wen I went to view it Bear with me tho it'll prob got tits up lol M.T |
Well heres eather the pics of the car or just some links to them or it hasnt worked at all :D Fingers crossed!

WOOHOOOO!
Sorry normally that takes me 3 or 4 attempts to do that :) M.T |
Looks good. :)
|
Thanks man just need to get it home and get this fuel pump sorted  Pain in the dick i just wanna drive it!!
well if i need any help am sure some1 will help :) M.T |
are you sure its the fuel pump??? i would expect it to have more probs if it was that.
personally id look more to the fuel pressure reg, i think most of us on here have had to change one sometime or another. if the fuel pump was sticking, id expect idle to be ok, and driving to be an issue?? |
bloody hell, i've just thrown 2 pumps and 3 fuel rails /pressure regs.:(
|
Well im only going on what ive been told by this guy am buying it from.
This is roughly whats happening with it. You start it it and it catches but it idles rough so it just kind of bubbles the revs sort of like how a subaru impreza sounds ..bah bah bah bah (black sheep) not a smooth idle like you would expect from a verticle piston engine. As you squeeze the accelarator it struggles to get through the revs. But if you lift the fuel pump cover and hit the top of the pump it'll idle fine. Any ideas? Its sitting in the yard at work at the moment (no tax) so im gonna borrow the works trade plates to get home and try and fix it at the weekend. The guys givin me the workshop manual for it so that should help me along the way :) M.T |
is the tank breather blocked ? it could be causing a vaccum.
|
Will the location of the tank breather be in the workshop manual? and i can check when i get it home?
Do you think it could be anything to do with the fact hes been putting lead replacement fluid into the fuel tank? Or will theat damage anything in the engine? I no it has a lower igniton rate than unleaded. M.T |
Sorry I can't answer you questions but that spoiler looks good. More coherent that I would have guessed.
|
not sure what redex will do to your pump mate, but i think the breather (one way valve) sits on top of the tank,:).
|
Thanks for the help guys I'm getting the car home the day so ill try and get it fixed over the weekend :)
M.T |
Well got car home.
Given it a service seems to run ok now won't know for sure till I take it out a run. But am still confused as to what fuel i should be using. According to the owners manual it says it. Unless fitted with a cat it shoul be run on Leaded fuel and auto data says the same. Altho you've all told me to run on unleaded. I know this question is probally annoyin everyone but its buggin me I'm just confused. Thanks M.T |
Most Nissans I've seen have a sticker on the inside of the fuel filler door. I'd expect it to read 97ron unleaded. Mine does, the B12 sunnies with the N/A 16vs I've seen do, as do the Bluey Turbos I've seen. Never know a CA to run leaded.

From what my father has told me there was a high octaine leaded fuel on sale as well as the lower run of the mill stuff am just a tad confused. I done want to burn my valve seats but if everyones runnin 97 ron unleaded with no problems then ill follow Suit.
I have the same sticker on the inside of my filler flap. Just wanted a second opinion thanks for the help guys :). M.T |
matey, i've had 13 silvia's over the last 12 years, japster and silviagod have had many s12's as well and for longer than me, they will all tell you that they are fine on 97 octane and 95 octane if you don't boot it,i did 45k on my 305bhp silvia, it was fine and not valve wear , as long as you get your afr and timing right, then you will be ok,leaded and 5 star is real old school, rover 2.2tc springs to mind lol, most people on hear know there onions and you won't go far wrong mate,;)
|
Ok thanks man.
Just don't wanna wreck this car I feel guilty enuff abouy usin it as a daily driver lol Cannie belive how good condition its in. Its nearly the same age as me! Thanks again dude. Live long and prosper! M.T |

Seriously bro, nobody on here will give you bad info. This forum is a small but informed group of serious enthusiasts who for the most part have owned and run their cars for years.I've never met any of them but I would take their advice as gospel and my car has 286ponies;)
|
well thats ma s12 sorted thanks for the help guys.
My dad figured out it was the fuel pump causing problems it was letting air into the system somewhere so we went to the scrappy and pulled a nissan almeras fuel pup moter out and he rigged it up so it runs in the old cradle :) seem to be running fine now doesnt cut out or have rough idleing so that should be it fixed until i can afford a genuine part :). At least it running so i can now (as of tommorow) Drive my new/old car:D M.T |
Mine always seemed to run fine on 95, incidentally. No idea what long term problems it could cause. I've always planned on going DET (200SX 1.8 16v Turbo) so didn't really care tbh.
|
Well i foned a guy who skims cylinder heads and he says that it should run fine on 97 ron as long as im not going on extended journeys as the unleaded burns alot hotter and could eventually damage the valve seats so it should be fine.
Just wanna say thanks again for all the help and info guys :) Just need to find some nice style 15 inch wheels for it now not diggin the standard rims look too much like wheel trims lol. M.T |
when i first got mine i was concerned about this, but i spoke to an engine place, and they said that as its a turbo engine, will will have the same valve seat inserts that an unleaded engine has. also use 97 super unleaded, because it causes less damage than 95 premium unleaded, seems the lower octane make it burn faster and hotter, also can cause the timming to be out on 95 ron (tis only a fraction)
http://www.burtonpower.com/technical...aded_fuel.aspx also the higher octane can protect the turbo engine from detonation. |
