Which external wastegate?

The T3 with custom exhaust manifold is going on. Which external wastegate shall I get? Jon wants one on that has atleast 1 bar of spring rate. He has recommended this one but we want to know what you think. If you know of a better one post up and let me know :)

that looks good enough mate, i used a cheap xs power wastegate on my blue beastie, i'am using twin tial on the fj, but they are £230 plus each:eek:

was yours loud mate? I am a bit worried about the noise as it will be a daily drive. I am assuming it only 'whoooshes' when you put your foot down? Am I right or not?

don't be :ghey, they are not over load, they don't come on until on near enough full boost.they sound , you will love it.

i had an ebay cheapie too Gripo, was fine. Only problem was i ran a screamer pipe and it used to 'chuff' at idle, didnt seat perfectly until about 1200rpm. Sounded good at full throttle.
if i ran one again, i would run the ext wastegate exh pipe back into the main pipe after about a metre from the turbo. does stop the noise a fair bit and stops the scrutineers asking why i have two exhaust pipes at scrutineering:rolleyes:

from what i know, the sizing and spring pressure is based on two things, amount of gas flow and what boost solenoid you are going to use.
if you have a small to medium flow turbo, then a 60mm ext WG would be overkill as soon as it opened it would bleed off a huge amount of gas and actually cause an erratic boost curve. ideally a 38mm-45mm is fine on most turbos imho.
With the spring, go for a spring rated at the minimum amount of boost you are going to run, then youre boost solenoid will bleed off enough to give you 'overboost' ie spring at 14psi, with boost solenoid closed, then say 20psi with it open.
I had a problem with my boost solenoid on mine. with the boost solenoid fully open i could only get 12psi, so i guess the spring was about 7psi. i changed the boost solenoid to a 225 Audi TT version and that helped, allowing 15-16psi max.

hope that helps mate

i know of a skyline that lost 70bhp from piping the screamer pipe back in, probably piped in to close to the turbo, i'd keep it external, it sounds awsome.

good to see some other views. I used the exact same external wastegate as you shaun before, But i couldnt seem to find them anymore on ebay.

I like the build of that one in ebay and it looks to come with good gaskets etc....

I ran my wastegate external with no sreamer pipe going to atmosphere and mine seated fine everytime at idle. I used a 1 bar internal spring and for a while used no additional controller with it. It was a very stable boost pressure.
Gripo has a greddy electronic controller.
Will have to see where his wastegate outlet sits and go from there.

I want to fit an external wastegate to my evo at some point soon. Im just unsure on what manifold to go for.

PukkaSilvia 02-03-2010 20:32

by the way it only is loud while on full boost as that is where the wastegate begins to blead your exhaust gasses away to modulate your peak boost. And then obviously it chatters at the same point that your dump valve would. Its great

you could go for anything, but if you was going for serious tuning, then you would need runner lenghts to suite your your cams / rev range.

PukkaSilvia 02-03-2010 21:37

nah im not really going into anything too serious. I want to get some savings together for incase i go travelling at some point one day.

thats a lot of weight, i'd like to see a pic or vid of your 200kg press mate, that would be awsome at your weight.what
do you weight mate, i only did 500lbs at 17 stone.must be good drugs these days.

gripo 02-03-2010 22:11

By the way Pukka,

if you wanna go travelling and don't want to do the usual Australia Thailand etc route that alot of brits do, i would recommend the Caribbean. I spent 2 years visiting the missus there every school holiday. She was based in Providenciales in the turkes and caicos islands. Super place. I have info on it if you ever are interested,

gripo 02-03-2010 22:13

Its the only thing i am getting ok at is bench pressing. I have put some weight on and need to shift it ideally. Im weighing 13st 11 at the moment. Realistically 175kg but im aiming for 200kg by the end of the summer.

Been seeing a chiropractor for my back and that seems to be helping my lifting loads

CNHSS1 02-03-2010 22:27

Pukka
dunno why mine leaked at idle, shouldnt have been seeing vacuum as had takeoff from comp housing, i always put it down to softish spring and cheap ebay quality:D
