Lowering...

Alright guys, well it's a mod i'll be wanting to do because lets face it less roll around corners and lowered is just amazing. So... Was wondering whats the deal with this news i've hearing about shocks and springs? Sounds like this would be the best option but was looking for a bit of a good drop so coilover conversion may have to be done.

Any advice would be greatly appreciate! Cheers XD

Not much help on these forums to be honest, only kind of help i've been getting is some sort of answers from our american friends but seems to be if you know a bit about cars.

PureButeS12 13-04-2010 10:07

i'm havin the exact same dilemma, for the front i've used the standard shocks with threded sleeves & 5" long, 800lb springs from Demon Tweeks but tryin to get answers for the rear. Tryin to work out how i can ditch the rears seperate spring / shock setup & fit a Macpherson strut cos i want to go really low, worried if i put a lower spring in the back it'll pop out

i'll let you know if i find out more

Super Ace-K 13-04-2010 15:14

Yeah do keep me posted mate! Any info you can give on the fronts or pictures aswell would be appreciated.

I have put 35mm lowered springs on all round and leda gas struts on at the back. Just about clears everything with 215/45/17 on all round.

cool, where did u get them from? i need new rear shocks cos it looks like one side is leaking

:o

You can still get kyb gas shocks for s12's,but as fer as I know you will have to get the springs made by a spring company. If you do a search for lowering springs then you will get the info you need.
I've got 40mm lowering springs but I bought mine from canuc in canada and I don't think they do them anymore. You won't have any problems with them popping out.

i'll have a look for the springs but it's the shocks i'm interested in. cos i've already butcherd the standard front shocks & made them into custom coilovers i mite as well do the same to the rear. i think i'm goin to get kyb shocks & some rally springs but i'll have to make some kind of perch to keep the spring in cos i want my Silvia realy low

i've already found the KYB fronts on ebay but not rears, i'm goin to call KYB themselves 2mora

irish s12 14-04-2010 20:44

Somewhere on here there is info on using some ford escort shocks on the back for really low cars.I think they are shorter and won't allow the spring to pop out.Whatever way, with your car that low it will handle like a dog.
This is how my car sits with 40mm springs.Maybe not the way you want it to look, but in the handling stakes for a road car it is perfect.

See Gaz

Super Ace-K 15-04-2010 23:22

Cheers CamInHead, could anyone give me any pointers in checking coilovers (even distinct marks I should look for in pictures) to make sure they're okay?

CamInHead 16-04-2010 09:52

Just usual suspension stuff really. Check the body for any signs of oil leaking, check the springs for any cracks, rust etc and check the lower spring perch. They travel up and down on threads that travel round the body. They tend to rust and seize inplace when they get on a bit.

I wouldn't worry too much. Someone will want them if you need to sell them on.

PureButeS12 20-04-2010 13:35

i've managed to get an answer from South Yorkshire Springs & a set of -40mm front & rear springs is £129.25 delivered with a 2 week turnaround

Super Ace-K 20-04-2010 15:30

What kind of drop does that give and I guess you'd need to upgrade shocks then aswell as that?

available in 30mm or 40mm drop. standard shocks will be ok with that, however i've already bought a set of rear KYB shocks for mine as i've noticed one side is leaking.

i'm still in 2 minds as to what setup i'm goin for. i mite order these springs & get some front KYB shocks too... i really wanted to go lower but i'm out of work at the moment & fund are tight, this mite be the better option than expentive trial & error with random spring combo's

Super Ace-K 20-04-2010 15:40

Aye im in kinda same situation and going out buying new xbox games doesn't help funds either! hah

that's an investment, means you dont have to go the pub for entertainment. i'm xbox live all the way

Super Ace-K 20-04-2010 15:47

Heh yeah true. Aye same, I was on all night playing splinter cell.

PureButeS12 07-06-2010 01:14

finally got round to lowering the rear. took South Yorkshire Springs 6 weeks (told me 2 lol) but not really botherd cos it was a few weeks before i could be botherd to fit them once they'd arrived.

anyhow, this is how she is sitting with my custom coilovers on the front & a set of -40mm springs & KYB shocks on the rear

its made the car more grippy & predictable :)
