New project

Got this last week from Timelord with a load of bits. It an Auto and needs a Vic as it was a Cat D as someone smashed the nsr window and damaged the moulding (now fixed). Obviously doesn't take much now to write them off. Its got 92k on the clock and apart from a hole on each wing at the bottom, and the manifold blowing more than a prossy! its in very good nick. Now I've got to decide whether to keep it standard or not ?

i wasnt sure what post to reply to :D :trout

or did you buy 3 of them of him :P

northerner 23-03-2006 19:07

You've got the right one !!! I think my computer is on something since the power pack went! In with the deal i got a pair of front struts complete, Black dash carpets, zorst, Os door in red, front lights and loads of electrical bits. I can also have but have been unable to collect, Red Bonnet NS door and tailgate which he is to tip in a week so if any one wants them hes in Romford.

PukkaSilvia 23-03-2006 19:35

if its an auto it may be worth keeping standard and well serviced as an a2b comuter car. It does look nice. What stage is your grey s12 at now?

northerner 01-04-2006 19:01

Well spent about 3 hours today getting the Tubby Off. Didn't help that the Elbow was welded on to the Front pipe. Tried hitting it with a hammer and it still didn't shift. The Three back studs need Recoiling so its a good job I kept the Six left over from my last kit!. I've got another front pipe so I now need a T2 Elbow. Anyone got one spare that I can buy or swop ?

Dr Silvia 01-04-2006 20:09

Ive got one, how does £15 plus p+p sound??

northerner 02-04-2006 17:48

Pm'd you

northerner 10-04-2006 18:22

little progress

Well got a few things done today like cleaned up the tubby using a drill with a Wire wheel and replace one of the gaskets. There is a little play but nothing bad, I hope. I will take off the wings tomorrow and take them to my mate who will weld them up.

Update

Right got it all back together and did an oil change as it was like Black sludge and kind of runs weird. At Idle the engine doesn't seem to run smooth. So I whipped out the plugs and found that No.2 doesn't look like its firing properly. So I did a compression check and found

1 - 10 2 - 8 3 - 10 4 - 10 kg/cm2

The book says std 11.77 or min 8. I drove it and its drives quite well but no.2 has me a little worried. Anyone got any ideas ? maybe HG? :furious

wacomuk 30-04-2006 10:38

carbon deposits on the valves? or valve clearances are out. both will stop the valves seating probably and give you a low comp reading
valve clearances must be set hot

northerner 09-05-2006 13:36

Bad news!

Well I've now got to the bottom of the Bad running. Its the Big HG I'm afraid !!!! Dam dam dam!. Basically I found low compression on no.2 and added some oil and re checked it and only a few psi improvement. So off with the rocker cover to check that the valves weren't sticking or the tappets were loose but they were fine. When I got the car I changed the coolant as it was Bright Green. Changed it for the Blue stuff and in the filler cap is some YES you've guessed it Milky Mocha!!!! *astard. Wasn't much but enough to upset the running so next job head off jobby or sell the car as it is. Haven't decided yet although its far to good to scrap or break. :furious

adzs12 09-05-2006 13:57

Nah man dont give up now, its only a head gasket mate, you wouldnt be the first to have blown or changed one. so keep on the right track to being able to enjoy it after youve done the head gasket;)

30psi 09-05-2006 16:24

Just make sure you get that head skimmed properly and it won't blow again.

Ideally get it pressure tested as well, as it could be a crack.

northerner 17-05-2006 13:08

Well I took the head off today and found what was really wrong. NO.2 Inlet valve wasn't closing!. I don't know yet whether someones *uck up when changing the Timing belt / the valve is slightly bent or its the good old fashioned Carbon build up. I took off the rocker bars to make sure there all shut to check and I could see light on No.2, so there you go. I've checked the HG but it covered in too much *hit to see were it has gone. Anyways I had a good spare head which I've stripped for a thorough clean, skim and recut valves etc to save some time. One other thing though I have noticed that Oil was leaking from the tubby around the core/Exhaust housing so the seals are Fubar. I'll put up some pics later
Thanks Wacomuk!

Well on friday I went down to my mates Engine reconditioning unit in Tottenham were my cylinder head was overhauled. It was stripped cleaned throughly and skimmed. The valves were cut and the seats had the Three angle job done on his serdi machine. Heres a few pics of it done. Next job to refit it and find a decent SH turbo which I've had a few offers so far as mines Fubar !

PukkaSilvia 24-05-2006 19:09

Looks like they have done a good job.
Are you going to helecoil the manifold studs and rocker shaft retaining bolts?

Nissan really did fit those valve heads tight together.

northerner 24-05-2006 20:49

The two studs missing have been Helicoiled by myself already. The rocker ones are fine as I checked them whilst it was stripped. Had to use a drill with a wire attachment in the ports to remove the carbon and muck!

adzs12 24-05-2006 22:37

Whilst its off mate i would strongly suggest u force the old studs out so the whole lot are freshly helicoiled. I left one in out the 6 that was solid and within 3 weeks it fell out:mad: since the lot have been done none of then nuts have budged so im blow free:cool:

northerner 25-05-2006 10:33

Yeh I'm inclined to agree. I'll do the other One whilst its off and the weather is *hitey! :D

northerner 28-05-2006 18:55

After the rain had stopped I managed to put the head, manifold back on a do some of the little fiddly bits. Heres a few pics

northerner 05-06-2006 13:36

H'mmmmmm got my New turbo today. Its a standard Turbo technics recon unit which I got cheap from an old post on Zxoc . It actually turned out to be for a Cherry Turbo but lucky for me they are the same units. I had to turn around the housings and change over the actuator to fit.

Update

Well there was one other difference found with the Turbo which I was stumped on. The Oil thread line at the top of the Turbo was bigger than the standard thread size. I could Not understand it as the Cherry Turbo oil inlet size is the SAME as the Silvia one. Basically on the Silvia Oil line (standard) it has different size nuts at either end. It actually turned out to be the larger size so I buchered Two standard pipes and put on the larger nut and flared the end. Its all back together now and running but I have ordered a braided hose from Ebay as there only £20!. Its been time consuming as I've been setting it up once warm (ie tappets, timing and flushing out the oil/coolant and replacing it with New stuff). I've also sprayed the radiator to make it more presentable as its a Recon and paint was flaking off. The body needs a good T cut and polish ..Pics to follow...

PukkaSilvia 15-06-2006 20:16

It should turn into a really nice reliable s12 (is there such a thing? )

Are you keeping it auto and is this to eventually replace your grey s12?

northerner 15-06-2006 21:01

I think it will be the wifes baby but I will occasionally have it (if you know what I mean) :p

Update

Well its been a while but I finally got the beast down to North London Vosa Vic station were it passed today. It needed this check as the car was a cat c insurance right-off as someone had smashed the two N/S windows ! Cost me £36 for some technician to check the chassis number buts its done now any road. The car Ran sweet the 60 mile round trip. It amazed me how quiet and smooth a standard Auto is! Nothing like my modded Manual. I've got rid of flakey Silvia wheels and have replaced them with some 15" Primera which smarten it up. Next on my list is to sort the corrosion on the front wings and a small hole in the F/O/S sill.

PukkaSilvia 07-08-2006 19:23

Do you have a picture of the primera wheels on the old girl?

n1 m8, glad it all went through ok.

northerner 09-08-2006 17:24

Few pics with the 15" primera alloys. I also got rid of the horrible old spoiler and filled the holes with some trim blanking plugs and some black RTV to fix them in place. you can buy them in a pack from Halfrauds.

wheels

That looks like they were made for the car mate, have you had to space them or were they straight fit ???

northerner 09-08-2006 19:36

Straight fit! The standard ones were Fubar and had these from Biggus ditchus in my shed

FLEXXX 09-08-2006 23:14

wheels look great mate :)

PukkaSilvia 14-08-2006 09:41

Looking very clean :) With some mint rear lights she will look even better.. A fibreglass copy rear spoiler would be a good idea i think

northerner 16-08-2006 15:38

Starting problems!

Well I went to start the car this morning and it didn't want to go! So I whipped out the Ecu and it gave the Water temp sensor. Upon checking it, I found that the connector was half missing and the contacts were rotten. Also as I pulled it off, I found one of the wires had been soldered before and snapped. So I fixed it using a decent Injector connector I had lying around and soldered the joints good and proper, job done!. I also took off the Coil and cleaned up all the wires and metal joints and added another Negative wire to the inner body. These are really prone to corrotion! No more starting problems. :1la

kennyboy 17-08-2006 09:00

Biggus
