Few S12 related questions

Alright lads, well I was just wondering a few things about mods I have planned. Currently the mission is to have the S12 restored with the full jdm look. Already have a few items imported waiting to go onto the car XD but my main questions are relating to the exhaust and manual e.c.u. Was wondering whats my best option for exhaust, to just get a custom stainless one made up or try and get a branded one, e.g hks or something? Next question is about swapping car to manual, got everything I need sitting in the house but was wondering what does the S12 drive like in manual relating to the turbo? Does it just kick in at certain revs 3000/4000?

P.S meant to ask about coilovers for the S12 aswell. I think the fronts are pretty straight forward as you basically replace everything with s13 parts then the coils will fit but curious about the rear with our unique set up. I know its been done by other guys but wondering if anyone local knew about it.

Cheers!

Chris

1) You will almost certainly find it impossibile to find an "off the shelf" exhaust for an S12 so custome all the way ie; Powerflow, Longlife etc.

2) My S12 wasn't especially "turboy" it just kinda has a second wind around 1500-2000 revs but it's a tiny turbo and not running all that much boost. Not to mention 130bhp from new (so probably about 100 now)..:ghey

3) You're only real option is either some custom affair or BC Coilovers. BC are actually pretty good but yeah you need S13 hubs. The rear is a seperate adjustable dampner and a regular spring with a machined adjustable seat, similar to the adjustable sections of a coilover.

People arwe always like "OMGBBGCOPTER teh shit etc" at the S12 IRS but I don't see why they moan so much...

s13eater 20-08-2010 19:30

my mate maybe breaking his silvia, he has a scorpion 2 3/4 stainless system on it.

Super Ace-K 23-08-2010 14:31

Cheers for the replies lads

Aye thought it'd have to be a custom effort. What sort of exhaust would you say I'd need to get? Like measurements, straight pipe etc?

Aye I was reading a bit about coilovers, seems I pretty much need to get S13 hubs, lca's and other parts? Would the rears be hard to change over to S13? Yeah I seen aswell there's a company called megan coilovers that sell a set suitable for our cars with the rear springs seperated already. I'd love to get coils, wonder how hard it'd be.

Haha what'd you mean by "OMGBBCOPTER!"? Lost me there.

Ahh S13 eater, could you keep me posted about that exhaust your mate might be selling then? Are scorpion exhausts good? Meant to ask aswell, would you know if he'd have a sunroof latch for the inside as mine is broke and cant close it properly.

Cheers again for help here lads!

Chris

Look down after the multiple options for suspension at the Megan Coilover information. There is actually a bit on the Rear Coilover setup and how to correct it.

To get coilovers in the rear seems quite difficult....would a mechanic know or would you need to know the S12 itself?

northerner 24-08-2010 18:20

To fit coilovers to the rear, you would need to weld in some new strut perches in the floor/inner arches which would be a major job. The easiest would be to weld a perch on each trailing arm and use some separate coils and uprated shocks. I think Shauns doing this atm...

See this is what I saw and fancied getting.... or even if I could get the car set up to accept S13 coilovers. Who's Shaun on here? See there's no way I could attempt it myself as I'd botch it completely but I dont even think your normal mechanic would know what to do as its a different set up to most cars.

They're more or less the same as the BC kit over here.
Forget the rear S13 coilover thing. Trust me it isn't gonna happen.

Do not go with Bartco products. There has been a big issue of people not receiving after payment. Bart has also disappeared from the site with several people with unanswered questions.

Here are some options:

Ah that'd be brilliant mate, see thats the kind of thing I wouldn't know about, thought it would have to be all S13 parts etc. You'll definitely have to let me know whats required and maybe a guide? Heh when you're done. How's it going so far anyway on the conversion?

i'll let you know as soon as mate, mine just wants mapping engine side, other things are z31 rear end with coilover , new wheels and respray for next year.

Super Ace-K 28-08-2010 22:47

You're re mapping engine aye? What you got, ET or DET? You have anything done so far or is your S12 just standard? Oo right, so you're using Z31 rear ends for coilover conversion? Are they not hard to come by?

matey, have you read my about my conversion on the project section? its the fj20/et, hoping for around 750bhp mate.

Draconis 29-08-2010 10:06

Shaun, keen on the rears as well. May have to buy a set from you in the future.

ok mate, i'am going to be taking the car off of the road soon, as i've missed all this season for drag racing, then i'll start the conversion.

Super Ace-K 29-08-2010 22:08

Hah sorry mate, I didn't realise that was you for a second with the FJ, pc's been broke for a while now so only internet I have is the phone and it doesnt show site properly. Was looking on that rally design and seen the coilover conversion section, seem to sell all the piping and stuff? Can you just ask for different measurements or something? I'll leave it to you anyway as I wouldn't have a clue what parts are required, where to source them or how to go about it. I have a slight clue, seen a video of a japanese guy making DIY coils for the AE86

s13eater 30-08-2010 01:45

if i was doing the fronts again it would be best using the s13/14 convertion, but the rears, i'am looking at doing a proper coilover where the spring sits on the rears.

Super Ace-K 16-09-2010 13:36

You made any progress mate with those custom rears? Dying to see how it works out (so you can build me some : P)
