Help needed

I am at the stage now were the engine is having to come out to have the rings changed.

At this point I have 3 roads:

1) Change the rings and go on my way, quoted £300 to sort this.

2) Uprate internals and have a strong engine going forward, Do S13 items fit i.e Pistons, Rods, Crank Girdle? Same £300 quoted to fit. What is the best route forward here and related costs?

3) Go the DET route. What are the related costs of doing this?????

Really looking for support on this as too many people would lose interest at this junction and Break the Car.

THIS IS NOT AN OPTION FOR ME, As I Love My S12 Too Much:D

s13eater 28-08-2010 20:34

knoing what i know now, i think i'd put a det in with a set of forged piston, or forgies and steel rods, then turbo upgrade at a later date.:)

PukkaSilvia 28-08-2010 22:08

300 quid!

Thats cheap,

rings are around 100
head skimming 25
head gasket 35
big end bearings 45
oil and filter 35
cambelt 25
poss headbolts and i wud do cambelt tensioner £?

Whos doing the work for 35 quid tops?

paulsilv 29-08-2010 20:38

Cheers guys,
Shaun did you mean forgies and steel rods in the ET as an upgrade? What would be the cost of these and where from? Would they be S13 items?

Would you recommend stripping a DET before putting it in? and what would you check for and change?

John,
300 quid is labour only. All parts would be ontop.
It had the head skimmed, all new belts, thermostat, waterpump, belt tensionerwhen he (Same Guy) did the head gasket.

Would you change big end bearings also and renew headbolts and head gasket again?

Is there such a thing as an S13 Piston, Rod and Girdle upgrade.

Can anyone else give the Pro's and Con's of changing to DET and the change in characteristics of the car, good and bad.

What area cost wise should I be looking at for at a DET swap?

You forgot an Oil pump £130
Timing belt kit £130

I would rebuild the DET before it goes in tomake sure it doesnt have to come out again!

s13eater 29-08-2010 22:58

i'd go det as well mate.

Just been offered these on SXOC,

What do you think?????

1)
Hi mate,I'm not sure if it's a CA18DET engine you're wanting or not.
I have a CA18DET engine and gearbox. The only thing I don't have for it is a T25 turbo and an ECU. These can both be picked up easily on these forums. T25's come up all the time and a guy on Driftworks sells chipped ecu's pretty cheap. The wiring loom etc is all there though. The engine has just had a top end rebuild at a cost of £250. I split the car though as I needed the cash but I still have this left. I also have a couple of prop shafts a spare gearbox and a standard, unwelded diff along with a couple of other bits and bobs.

2)
hi mate ive got a good ca18det,its from an auto with 66k on the clock.although i have no further history on the engine.

it comes with all ancilleries ie:starter, inlet, altenater, exhaust mani,...no turbo!

it will come with a box full of origional intercooler pipes if needed, and intercooler.

id like £250.

if you need a loom i have an auto 200sx which is due to be scrapped, your welcome to remove anything you like from it free of charge,

Either sound OK but have no history or come back. This was the dilema that I had when I wanted to go the DET route. As I didnt want to put in a SH one then start taking it out of the bearings had gone, I decided to rebuild one so I knew it would not cause me any probs.

paulsilv 31-08-2010 20:48

What would be a sensible price to put on rebuilding one of these or what should be done before putting one in.

Impossibly green at this so need all the help I can get:)

The main thing is that you get a block thats has Standard bores ie no damage or you will have to go for a Rebore. Pistons are the £400 plus. If you get a SH one then change the Mains/Rod bearings and rings. Then have the head skimmed and all the valves relapped in. Depends on on far you want to go matey and how reliable you want it

PukkaSilvia 02-09-2010 00:03

why did the first engine need a top end rebuild? whats the state of the bottom end. DET top ends are normally pretty good. if its not chances are the bottoms not great either

i would buy the second engine.

when it arrives i would take the cambelt cover off and check condition. i would then take the cam covers off and clean them and the cam areas all up.I would also check the cam cover breather pipes are all clear of debris.

I would also remove the sump, clean it up inside and replace the bigend bearings with some std size acl bearings from apex performance. use some wet and dry to lightly prep the crank(deglaze)( about 45 quid)

new oil and oil filter and spark plugs and paint the block nicely

then just wack it in and i should think it should all be pretty nice.

On the old et route

i would have the head skimmed with a new gasket and cambelt as there never reliable a second time round imo.

will this fit??????

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...:X:RTQ:GB:1123

CamInHead 03-09-2010 18:48

Don't buy any performance parts off of ebay. Actually don't buy any part off ebay. Unless it's 1) Cheap and you have low expectations 2) Trusted Seller 3) You're desperate.

paulsilv 03-09-2010 21:55

I know exactly what you mean about eBay:) just wondered if the SR20DET was a straight swap in

CamInHead 04-09-2010 17:02

No, but probably worth it nonetheless. I hope to go SR eventually, though I'll strip out everything, if I go that far, and more or less build it up from nought.
