Flywheels
Ive decided im going to get a lightwieght flywhee (ca18det) l later this year after the fibreglassing and respray are out the way. Heres the one im after. 4.5kg :)
Im unsure what the standard one weighs but i know its crap :p http://www.driftworks.com/catalog/im...CAflywheel.jpg its £245 or £208 in a group buy once ten people are signed up. |
lightend ones are good, crisper excelaration, however be prepaired for it stalling all the time.!! the crank has been designed to keep the factory one spinning through inertia, if you lighten it, there isnt enuff inertia to keep it spinning at low revs (when you come to stop) so it will stall. same if you rev hard & let it drop. it will cut out.. i
have the same problem.. just got to live with it. or get the crank balanced to match. |
the standard flywheel weighs 11.5kg or 25lbs oops thats on a silvia engine but i cant see the s13 flywheel being much lighter
|
at a guess then id think the 4.5 kilo one would be way too light on std internals... i'd like to try a 7 kilo one and see how that went:)
shaun do you know how heavy your flywheel is? |

kl not to worry mate:) was just an idea
also ive remembered that the flywheels i've removed from mk1 and 2 engines have been different... does anybody know if there is a weight difference between the two (just bein curious again):D |
i had an SE S12 that was approx 10.5kgs iirc (stock 14.5kgs) and the ones i had machined were 9.5kgs. It would be difficult to get a machined std ET one down much below 9kgs and it still stay in one piece!
In my opinion a 4.5kg flywheel ould be pointless on a road car. Yes it would rev more freely but on a clockwork ecu the bloody thing would forever be cutting out. Most race cars that have mega light flys, have 2000rpm tickovers for a reason. |

Interesting comments.im still going for that one as im sure it will do wonders for my engine and driving style :)

Thanks anyway. I was just showing everyone the flywheel as i was impressed to find it for my engine at a cheap price off the shelf |
give ya that lol its a nice lookin bit of kit... is that black anodising or a paint job?? shame to hide it away really, mebbe a glass bellhousing could be made:D

well 25 pounds = 11.34 Kg's so the confusion still stands... are you 100% on that stock flywheel weight CNHSS??
|
You would expect them to be lighter on the mk2 hopefully. We need to find out 100%
|
it would be logical:)
when adam and i took the flywheel off of my mk1 engine and compared it to the mk2 wheel it was definately different... without access to the bathroom scales however i didnt get the opportunity to compare on the spot:( |
Im sure i have a mk1 and 2 flywheel kicking about still so il weigh the 2 when i get a chance;) I definately remember the difference doc when we compared the 2:)
|
good man:)

I've got a lightened flywheel (that no one has bought yet).
I remember when I checked, it was 4lbs lighter but thats with bathroom scales which isnt the best way to measure the difference. You notice the engine is more responsive at idle but it doesnt make a huge difference when driving. Thay flywheel is pretty expensive and such an item is really only beneficial on something with a fully balanced, knife edged bottom end assembly. A lightened flywheel doesnt reduce the torque at idle (as most like to believe) it actually reduces its inertia. So if you are clumsy with the clutch you lose the inertia quickly. Its a way of storing energy. I would only be concerned when using a tight arsed bastard paddle clutch with a light flywheel as you are much more likely to kill the little inertia the flywheel has. |
sorry for the confusion, i was relying on my memory regarding the original weight, so you may be right with the 11.5 or 11.34kgs, but the machined weights are correct.
Pukka sorry for the confusion, my point was more that someone fitting a 4.5kg flywheel in a silvia with std ecu (where it cant be remapped to help the slow running) would make the car a pain in day to day use. My car weighs 750kgs, uses a 9.5kg fly and AP paddle and nismo cover and is crap at anything below 20mph. Luckily its only for moving around the paddock or pits but it does p*ss me right off. Couldnt put up with it in a road car. I would have thought that a heavier car (silvias are 11-1200kgs right?) would be worse still. As for the fly, it does look the nuts, just wish they did one to suit the ET bolt pattern:( |
Craig, your right the issue comes when driving over speed humps and shit like that where there is slack on the transmission. A nice flywheel dampens this.
A lumpy idle won't be dampened by the flywheel and it will idle worse. On a multi cylinder engine you can get away with it more. |

iirc the det and et flywheel bolt patterns are the same anywah arent they? |
they are different, aint one 6 bolt and the other 8 bolt?.
|
so it is:D :o
i think its stilll a bit early for me:rolleyes: |

Look forward to those flywheel weights Adz. . My mk2 ets have alsways seemed to rev easier.Maybe its just coincidence...
|
the KA24 flywheels fit's not in the ca18
