changing the steering rack

has anyone changed the rack on the s12 with the engine still in ? if so is it a c*nt to do ? any tip what to remove, i've only striped one out with the engine out, i'am changing to the non power rack.

i did mine and didn't find it too bad! but i was usin a pit! just undid the engine mounts and lifted the engine a bit! had to bend the pipes a bit to get the rack passed them so was a pain gettin them back in but u won't be usin them again anyway!

Getting the manual rack back in there will defo be easier.

Out of interest though how many turns lock to lock is it?

i still need to change my rack as well........no pas and welded diff arent much fun for parking:rolleyes:
i think the non pas racks are the same as the 910, 4.1 lock to lock i think?

i need the non power rack for the fj as i will have a cd2000 exrernal oil pump bolted where the power steering pump would fit.

Cant the oil pump be bolted lower down on the block?

If it is 4 turns lock to lock like my car its not going to be the best solution.

i think it would be a little cramped, with an alternator and a oil pump on that side, i need to drive it off of the nose of the crank.

Why not have an electric motor running the pump?
