spacers!!!!!!!

took a drive to colechester last nite to pick up some bits from beanys12 got a nice vibration while doing 70mph (maybe a bit more at some time) think arh wheels need balancing i continued the speed got the and back fine on the way to work this morning i gave her alot of abuse then slowed down and while driving at 15mph round a roundabout my extended studs decided they snap :furious
luckerly 1 stayed on and didnt lose the wheel so ive orderd a bolt on spacer kit which should hopefully not snap with the stress of drifting!!!

I had exactly the same problem a few years ago with a Mk2 Escort and extended wheel studs.
It`s a good job you were only going slow, when it happened ;) .

Ian.

Not good. I have proper bolt on spacers, you can't fault them.

Is there possibly an issue with the material of the studs? ie not high tensile steel?

The problem I had, was that I didn`t re-torque the wheel nuts soon enough after fitting them. The instructions said to re-torque after 100 miles, but personally I think they needed to be done after a couple of miles.
Could have been a dangerous mistake, if I hadn`t been going slowly, when they finally let go.

Ian.

i think it is what there made of to be honest i do give the car a thrashing beyond road use my fault shouldnt have tried to go the cheapp way about it! yes ive ordered the proper bolt on ones now at £65 insted of £9 the others cost me lol so glad it didnt happen on the a12 last nite though

Damn now i'll be scared to use my spacers :D
They can be used as bolt'ons, but the holes are 4x108 (the guy before me used some aloys from a peugot i believe), o if i want to use nissan wheels i need longer studs. But after this post i rather not...

TBH the spacers and extended bolts I used were probably only designed for use with slightly larger wheels than standard. But the wheels I had on my Escort were over twice the normal width, not to mention the difference in offset ;) . If the extended bolts I had used did not snap, then I don`t think my wheel bearings would have lasted too long ;) (a bit like Chop Shop-London Garage....LOL....).
So I would not worry too much about using spacers or extended bolts, as long as they are suitable and you re-torque the wheel nuts after a short amount of use :D .

Ian.

i do drift m car and give it alot of abuse in ways which would put extra strain on the studs so its up to you weather you use spacers i personal wont use that type again but there are different kits which are designed not to do it!

The wheel studs must have been made of chocolate, they should never break under any circumstances.
