S14 front brake set up

I have finally finished putting the whole thing together so thought it would be good to put a how to

The s14 callipers will work with the standard s12 brake set up, You will just need to get some braided hoses made up with s12 end put on for the main brake line side and s14 end put on to go onto the calliper. You will need these to do the full set up aswell. I got goodridge to make mine up, you can ring them direct and they were not much more expensive than getting a set of standard s12 goodridge ones. You could also try Hose Solutions, i have had a few things made by him and he's really gd and cheepest i have found so far.

Having just the s14 callipers in did make a lot of difference and was a gd easy fix but there is quite a lot of work to do the full set up.

Complete set up

When i got my s14 callipers i bought a standard nissan recon kit for them, its a bit fiddly to do but worth it in the long run.

To start you will need to strip the front hubs apart and remove the bearings. You will need to change the wheel bearing now this is all apart, dont buy the wheel bearings from nissan as they will cost a stupid amount of money. What i did was took the bearings down to a local industrail stockest that did bearing and they checked the codes and even had them in stock, the 2 bigger ones were about £10 each and the 2 smaller ones were about £7.

Due to the old s12 disc bolting at the back where as the s14 disc slips over the hub and wheel studs, the s12 hub will not fit into the disc. This will need to be machined down. I was lucky and have a friend who is an engineer with all the tools but a local company should be able to do it for you.

Now you will need to get your disc redrilled from 5 x 114.3 to 4 x 114.3, i was lucky again as my mate had made a dolly whiched used one of the existing holes and showed where to drill the others. You could get a local machining company to do these. Or alternatively you could buy a set of already drilled discs off someone on the sxoc.co.uk, there is always ones for sale.

Due to the s12 discs bolting to the back the wheel studs are only short on the front. I found that the rear wheel studs are just long enough to use, im not sure what they are like for lenght with most alloys as i am using hubsentric bolt on wheel spacers.

With the hub reasembled its starting to take shape

I made up the whole strut and refitted them back to the car

When originally looking at doing the full set up i thought i was going to have to make up new calliper brackets as i was fitting a bigger disc but on a test fit i realised these was just enough room for the disk to rotate without fouling the calliper

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...2/DSCF2014.jpg

The only problem was i needed spacers making up to offset the calliper so it sat in the middle of the disc. After a couple of trial and errors i found that the spacers should be 11.5mm long. I got mine made out of a piece of steel bar.

With the callipers fitted, i put the pads in and tightened up the braided brake lines. I think the set up looks the bollocks now :D

Thats such a good How-To.

Im sure it will be a really big help to a few people. I will probably end up doing it to my next s12

What is the diameter of the s14 discs compared to the s12 ones?

doski 16-02-2008 16:57

from what i can remember the s12 discs are 274mm diameter x 22mm thick and the s14 discs are 280mm diameter x 30mm thick

s13eater 16-02-2008 17:09

is the first pics s12 disc's  , i can't get my head around the pics mate, the top pic has'nt got a center in like the lower discs, or am i getting mixed up, have you got a pic of an s12 and a s14 disc side by side so i can get my head round it, i'am not with it today lol.:D

doski 16-02-2008 17:20

yea the first pic is an s12 disc. no sorry never took a pic of the discs side by side.... should have really

s13eater 16-02-2008 17:23

so the machining is on the s12 hub, the outer bit, so the center of the s14 disc can slide over it ?

doski 16-02-2008 17:40

yea thats right :D
