Flywheels
 

Ive decided im going to get a lightwieght flywhee (ca18det) l later this year after the fibreglassing and respray are out the way. Heres the one im after. 4.5kg :)
Im unsure what the standard one weighs but i know its crap :p

its £245 or £208 in a group buy once ten people are signed up.

lightend ones are good, crisper excelaration, however be prepaired for it stalling all the time.!! the crank has been designed to keep the factory one spinning through inertia, if you lighten it, there isnt enuff inertia to keep it spinning at low revs (when you come to stop) so it will stall. same if you rev hard & let it drop. it will cut out.. i

have the same problem..

just got to live with it. or get the crank balanced to match.

the standard flywheel weighs 11.5kg or 25lbs oops thats on a silvia engine but i cant see the s13 flywheel being much lighter

at a guess then id think the 4.5 kilo one would be way too light on std internals... i'd like to try a 7 kilo one and see how that went:)

shaun do you know how heavy your flywheel is?

no sorry mate:( , it was put in by SE, so i never had the chance to weigh it,i only found out last year that it was a lightend one, that was after having to take the starter out, i had payed for one, but ya never know with SE if they had put the parts in that ya payed for.lol.

also ive remembered that the flywheels i've removed from mk1 and 2 engines have been different... does anybody know if there is a weight difference between the two (just bein curious again):D

i had an SE S12 that was approx 10.5kgs iirc (stock 14.5kgs) and the ones i had machined were 9.5kgs. It would be difficult to get a machined std ET one down much below 9kgs and it still stay in one piece!
In my opinion a 4.5kg flywheel ould be pointless on a road car. Yes it would rev more freely but on a clockwork ecu the bloody thing would forever be cutting out. Most race cars that have mega light flys, have 2000rpm tickovers for a reason.

assuming you're both right, there is either a lot of variation in finished weights, or there's three kilos difference in weight depending on which mk flywheel you have:eek:

Our 1.8 racecars at work have 4kg or less full aluminium flywheels and dont have any problems and they can idle at 1k if we let them(be it very lumpy due to cam durations and jet setup)lol. Im pretty used to driving them all now and with them we never even let them idle as it can damage the camshaft/s(this is why most race cars set themselves a higher base idle.also anti lag systems use higher idle etc too).I will adjust the base idle to compensate if i need too.

Thanks anyway. I was just showing everyone the flywheel as i was impressed to find it for my engine at a cheap price off the shelf

give ya that lol its a nice lookin bit of kit... is that black anodising or a paint job?? shame to hide it away really, mebbe a glass bellhousing could be made:D
