yep thrash the pants off of it. the gaskets dont need wearing in..Most et engines are good. more reliable than sr20's and ca18det engines imo
. Your brother should be able to see if its any good from just the usual checks by the sounds of it.
you could drive it on the buggered gasket but it will be down on power considerably and sound like a tractor
