PlayStation 3 - Unveiled and due Spring 2006
The prototype of the PlayStation 3 was unveiled at E3 yesterday by Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi, who also confirmed that the console is due for release in Spring 2006.

At the core of the console is the brand new Cell processor, which was jointly developed by Sony Group, IBM and Toshiba Corporation, and runs at an amazing 3.2 Ghz.

Performance-wise, the system sports 2.18 Teraflops (teraflops being a measurement of how many floating point operations are processed per second). This means that the in-game movement of objects and characters will be more realistic plus environments, landscapes and virtual worlds will be rendered in real-time.

The controllers will be wireless, and you can play with up to seven of them using Bluetooth connectivity. So no more multitaps!

The discs are now based on Blu-Ray standard, as opposed to the current dual-layer DVD discs, and can store up to 54Gb.

The console will also have in-built networking via a Gigabit Ethernet port, Internet browsing functions, EyeToy-style video chat, photo browsing and archiving, two HDMI ports and plenty more.

More specifications of the console for the number-hungry can be found at the bottom of this post and the PlayStation.com team out in LA will be bringing us plenty more news about the console over the next few weeks.
