I`m hoping to start a major re-build on my 1986 s12 ca18et within the next few weeks and I`m hoping you guys can give me some opinions on the best way forward please
![]() I want to change the et for a ca18det and change the autobox for a matching manual box. 1). What`s the best year 200sx engine and box to go for and do you think all other parts (clutch cylinder etc) will be a straight swap onto the silvia ? 2). I`m looking for a reliable 300bhp, do you think this is achievable with forged pistons, reground crank, metal head gasket, etc, and should I opt for a set of steel con rods just to be on the safe side ? 3). Do the ca18det engines have bronze valve guides already fitted. If not, is this something to possibly have done ? 4). I`m planning on a hybrid T25/T28 turbo with 360 degree bearings, would this be the best option to go for ? 5). Obviously, I will be upgrading the fuel pump. But which are the best cc injectors to go for ? I plan to use the car for a bit of weekend fun, so it won`t be my daily driver, but I don`t want some fire breathing, monster that`s undrivable on normal A-roads ![]() Do you think that the engine, turbo, and fuelling mods above are achievable on a budget of about 4 grand, or am I way off target ![]() If you can give me some opinions on any of the above, I would be really grateful ![]() Regards, Ian.

1, the det rods should be ok for around 370bhp.
2, 444cc injectors from the skyline are ok for about 380bhp / 400bhp on a skyline, as there are 6 of them. 3, i would go for an aftermarket ecu that gets rid of the afm, then if you want more power at a later date, then your not restricted. 4, i'd go for a bit bigger turbo as well. if you have forged pistons and steel rods, then 300bhp will not be any problem, there's 500/600bhp det motors out there, as long as its built good and a good fuel map, then it will be fine.

Thanks for the info.
Looks like I will be going for the forged pistons then, I may as well have the steel rods installed too (just in case I get bored and want more power later ![]() I was planning on upgrading the ecu etc, which I`ve already got a separarte budget for. Any advice on the head please, obviously I want to run on super unleaded, so should I go for bronze valve guides, any advice on the cams ? Sorry about all the questions, I`m okay at engine/gearbox swaps and a bit of welding etc. But when it comes down to the technichal side, I`m more of a "bolt it on and see", kind of guy ![]() By the way, I`m not loaded, but I do want the best possible spec for the car, with the money I`ve got ![]() Thanks again for the tips, they are all appreciated ![]() Regards, Ian.

Your best to go on www.sxoc.co.uk/vbb for the best answers to your questions. Its been asked many times on there
If you want 300bhp this can be achieved on a completely stock engine with a decent T28, exhaust, air filter, 440cc injectors and a Z32 air flow meter. The Z32 afm isn't a restriction and has seen up to 500bhp on some DET's. I wouldn't consider steel rods unless you are certain you want to break 400bhp. To break 400bhp you will be looking at alot more money for all the additional parts. It will start becoming a different game.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the extra info ![]() I don`t want to spend silly money on the engine, but I do have a reasonable budget. Hopefully, if I can get my car up to 50% of the standard of cars such as Richard`s I will be more than happy. It`s always a big help, to be able to "pick the brains" of more knowledgable folk. So thanks again for your input ![]() Regards, Ian.
