MAF questions
How restrictive is the standard S12 MAF? Would we gain anything by using one from a different car? Is it even possible? I've got hold of an old Z31 MAF on the off chance but I only want to piss around with it if it's going to be worth it.
We're not looking at changing the intercooler and piping anytime soon but I was wondering if the inlet to the turbo was a bit more free flowing would it make a noticeable difference to spoolup or top end performance? Or is it the case that to make any real difference I'll have to change a bucket of things? We're running a T25 with standard injectors(although I've now got some S13 ones) standard head and cam with 2.5" straight through system with single Chav cut back box! Innit!

the standard AFm isn't that restrictive. I hit 300bhp on my s13 with one
the z32 AFM wouldn't be do-able, its the flap type and not hot wire, works completely differently. there are ways to make bigger AFMs work well, an SAFC allows you to change the AFM, one from an s14 is an improvement, or one from a rb20/25 skyline or a Z32. if you have a mk2 ecu you can chip the ecu to allow for these AFM changes too. I'll be working on seeing what the best upgrade route is when i get the chance and a car to do it with. |

The Z31 one that I've got is hot wire I think. It's pretty large too. Why can I not just wire it in place of the standard unit? (assuming I can find some kind of pin out for them both). As far as the ECU is concerned whats the difference? I was trying to think of a way to improve on the average power/torque instead of peek figures without pulling the engine apart. My thinking was that the easier it can pull air into the turbo then the faster it'll spin up.

you can't just fit the AFM without telling the ECU it's different, the voltage is related to the air flow, if you don't have the correct info going into the ECU the engine won't last long |
