Default Fuel Gauge reading

Is there any common problems with the fuel gauge on mk2's.Mine does not go back when you turn the car off.It seems to like sitting at 1/4 of a tank even when putting in £20 of petrol. The gauge was reading 3/4 of a tank them about 9 miles of hardish driving was all most at 1/4 of a tank.Could this be the fuel gauge sender unit playing up or the gauge it self.Any help or tips would be great.

Rule of thumb is don't trust ANY of the gauges. It could be the float arm is stuck or something, has it had an uprated or new fuel pump fitted? It's quite easy to bend it when the pump is removed/installed.

The dial could have just given up then. I'm not sure how you'd test the sender unit. It might in the workshop manual some where. Probably easier just to go by how many miles you've done since you filled up.

Might sound like a dumb question, but have you checked for any possible leaks in the system. When I first bought mine, it had a small leak on the fuel rail before the injectors. Plus gauges can give false readings, if the car is parked on an incline.
Apologies if you`ve already checked these .
Regards,
Ian.

There are no leaks. The gauge is not going back when you turn the car off.The gauge seems to like sitting at 1/4 full.
