symptoms of a blown turbo?
ok, I think I blew my turbo. but I'm new to this whole forced induction thing so I don't know.
it happened at high revs(near redline) and now when I start boosting/coming out of vac all hear is "SHHHHHHHHHHH" and see black smoke out of my tailpipe. It runs fine out of boost and what not, it started idling high today though at 1200rpm. Travis and I changed my intake manifold on the weekend and saw LOTS of blowby coming out of the turbo into the charge pipe. it was just coated in oil. what do you guys think? If the turbo is blown, then that's good and bad. I'm out of a car, but now I can do an engine swap...or slap on my T28..but I'd rather do the swap so I don't waste money doing the turbo, then swapping. Any help/thoughts are appreciated ~Tim ps: I'm also running 10psi non-intercooled |

im not really sure bout symptoms of blow turbo, but black smoke is normally rich mixture (i.e no extra air when the maf says you are on boost) check the pipes between the turbo and the inlet manifold, if you are not intercooled, and still using the std cross over pipe between the turbo and the inlet, then the turbo end has a orange seal, this i think cant take 10 psi boost, and has prolly blown out.
there is plenty of guys on here that will tell you exactly what those symtoms are. good luck

I replace that orange piece of shit with a proper silicone coupler.
I'll have to wait til the engine cools down before I can pick it apart... I'm half hoping it's just that one of the couplers blew off, and I'm also hoping that I killed the turbo lols I think I have an idea which coupler blew off if one did tho... edit: I just checked and all the couplers are still on securely. Its quite likely if you have fitted a new inlet manifold recently that your leak is there somewhere. You will have a rising of rpm at idle with the throttle closed as the engine is sucking in air though somewhere
This will also cause your smoke on boost as once the inlet becomes positively charged it will loose pressure and cause you to run rich

checked around the IAA just now, and saw that a hose coming out of the IAA blew off due to a crappy clamp.
I replaced the clamp and put the hose back on..going out to check it right now. hopefully that's the case, which I think it is. wish me luck guys...I'll keep you updated. |
