The difference here is what some people call a drift, letting the back step out on a junction isnt going to cut the pie, i pesonally think the standard diff isnt up to the job, or maybe im expecting too much from a 20year old car.

Open diff is just about acceptable for doing a roundabout in wet conditions, a VLSD will help alot in the wet and you can do transitioning but ultimately a locked or mech diff are ultimately whats required certainly for anything dry.
You get so much more control and predictability with a locked diff. You never know if an open diff will let both wheels spin, just one and for how long it will hold 2 spinning wheels for. It will piss you off on a practice day doing that so you're best get the welder out if you want to make the best of the practice day.

i dont seem to have any problems with the standard diff but i know once i lock it it will be a lot easier!
i dont call steping the back out drifting! ill get a video up of me doing a drift and then u can decide if you can drift with a standard diff |

I wasnt getting at anyone here, so no need to take it personally, i was just expressing my opinion, ive driven a s13 with a locked diff and it wasnt hard to keep it ass out style, but jumping back in the silvia i just couldnt grasp it, i want to get the diff welded but i dont want the orkward slow driving, mini roundabouts are a pain, maybe sme custom lsd mash up.
If i get into the drifting big style i'll just rip the front transfer box out of my evo, different. |

You can drift with an open diff but it will only spin the inside wheel, so its a bit lame and if you dont have much power it isnt really going to happen lol best of locking the diff up and having a crack at it!!
As i've heard S12's are brilliant drift cars, hence why i've got one. What are the standard handbrakes like on them? i.e. do they lock up the back wheels enough? I'm getting a hydro handbrake anyway but would be nice to try the standard one first. Here's a lil vid of me skiddin my old volvo on my second drift day at santa pod... Personally, i'd suggest santa pod DWYB days if you just wanna muck about and get the hang of drifting. |

s12 handbrakes are shite mate, i have new rear calipers and cables and they are still bad.

Ive stripped my calipers off, cleaned out the past years of grime, free'd everything up and there about 1.5%better, so i just clutch kick it, open diff is totally unpredictable, but as im not looking to keep her long and im not sure a buyer would want a mig spec diff so at the mo i'll have to be selective about where i go skidding, slopped or bermed corners are fine its the nice smooth corners my car wants to 'ditch find'

I can almost gaurentee you'll be able to sell the s12 with a mig spec, a lot of skidders i talk to would love a drifty s12 but there isnt many about, so i wouldnt worry about it effecting the re-sale value.
If anyone fancies putting a hydro handbrake in theirs, let me know, as some mates of mine will be doing a group buy soon! |
