how are the rest of the electrics?
i had this problem along with others when the wire connecting the alternator and battery +ve terminals broke, it might be worth using a spare bit of wire to make this connection as its a quick job  i think everything but the engine didnt work till i revved it up, then all would come to life, other than that it sounds the same.
