Yes it is an LSD, hold the prop shaft end solid hold 1 driveshaft side and the other shouldn't turn freely, if it does turn freely its not an LSD. If it turns with resistance it's an LSD. Turning opposite sides means nothing.

Turning opposite sides does mean something. If they're very tight to turn in opposite directions it's an LSD.
The only LSD which turns like an open diff and is nearly undetectable by hand unless you look without the cover is a helical type LSD.

Thats a helical type diff.
I do know something thanks. If you want advice, then don't say 'we think you know nothing'. I have an S15 helical diff and S13 LSD so I have a fairly good idea what I'm talking about

So if you can jack up a sierra 2wd cosworth and turn one wheel the other will turn in the opposite direction and they all have LSD's as standard. Whereas if the car is in gear leave one back wheel on the ground jack the other wheel up it will turn but there will be lots of resistance coz it has an LSD

Sierra's have viscous LSD's like the S13. Unless the LSD is fucked they wouldn't behave like that.
My shitty old Xantia will have a locked wheel if you leave it in gear and only jack one side.

the picture posted by jackiefan shows that the internals look different to mine it has the plates around the outside of the planet gears. The one in the picture shows the planet gears visible, mine can't be seen for the plates??

He's shown you an S12 diff thats why it looks different.
All you can see from memory of inside is very little as there are only 4 holes of about 1.5" diameter to see inside with

On the diagram you posted showing the S13 inners into S12 casing you used the drivers side inner cup from the S13 would using the S12 original drive shaft work if the splines were machined to take the circlip and maybe shortened or do you definately have to use a short passenger side S12 drive shaft onto the drivers side, the best bit is both my drive shafts measure 10" so which is the short one????
