Tyres for everyday driving
Just looking for peoples opinions on the tyres they have tried.
I've a set of Toyo proxes t1r's on the car at the moment and they are total rubbish.They have to be the most over rated tyre ever,brutal wet weather performance and not really that good in the dry either all in all pure crap. I've been selling tyres for a while now and the ones that people allways buy again and can't really fault are Uniroyals so I was thinking about getting a set of them instead. They are good value too,anyone tried them? |

i found t1-r's very good when i had them a few years back. There only a midrange tyre . im using Bridgestone potenza;s at mo. they came on the car, there alrite. nothing special either

I find them pretty bad to be honest and in the wet they are lethal.

a few of our guys in the Roadgoing classes have used T1-Rs for sprints/hillclimbs and found them pretty good to be honest. They do, like most tyres with a reasonably low treadwear indicator rating, suffer from overheating if given death! once the surface is overheated the oils dissapear and the surface hardens appreciably. The only way to get rid of this is to remove a couple of mm of tread depth. this must be done without heat, i.e. natural wear due to normal driving road miles, or have the tyres 'shaved' my a motorsport team. the difference is huge.
some tyres, not sure about the Toyos, have different shore hardnesses or rubber throughout the tread block depth. The first few mm are harder as the tread blocks move around more when new and full depth, creating more temp in the block. when the tyres become worn down to near the tread wear indicator bars, the rubbers softer to compensate. Thats why a lot of racers that have tio run road tyres buy brand new tyres and shave 5mm of tread off before running them the rubber also ages too. If the tyres are a couple of years old and yet barely used, they still wont be market fresh. Heat/cold cycles and UV light affect the aging hugely. Tyres that have seen a lot of arc/mig/tig welding (ie stored in a workshop where lots of weldings done) will age the surfaces that are exposed. On a std road tyre the effect isnt as bad as on racier rubber (R888s, Yoko AO48Rs etc and especially slicks/wets) but still will affect the tyres performance markedly.

My tyres have only ever been used for ordinary road driving and have never been subjeccted to any adverse conditions.
Maybe if you are using t1r's for racing and you have them up to temp then they will perform but for ordinary road use they are dreadful.I've done a bit of research on a website that I'm on which has over 4000 members and the general consensus is that nobody would buy them a second time. R888's are reckoned to be good but t1r's aren't. All the tyre tests I have read place them amongst budget tyres for performance,and I would have to agree. |

you get what you pay for with tyres im afraid.
Comparing R888s to T1-Rs or any other 'normal' road tyre is a bit unfair, 888s are a semi-slick and softer compound/harder sidewall, so transmit more road noise and vibration into the cabin (tiring for a roadie) and wear rate is MUCH higher. 888s also do need to warm slightly to work better than a boggo road tyre, they are sh*te in rain or v.cold (ie last 3 months) if the cars a 'sunday blaster' id go for a track based tyre and enjoy the benfits of the extra grip, but if its a daily the wear rate and nasty wet handling will get to you in the end. all my mates that have run them, ended up with a spare set of wheels for bad weather/normal driving whats the setup of the car? std suspension or modified?

bear in mind track-hero tyres like 888s will nolonger be road legal soon
