Default Fuel light

Anyone ever had their fuel light working in their S12? Mine lights up with the ignition but has never come on when I get to low fuel. I know it's a crap question but just wondered if anyone has any pointers before I start to rip the thing to pieces out of curiosity??

mine worked for about four years, the sensor is attached to the fuel pump carrier. I found a similar one in a Toyota at the breakers yard and swapped it and it has worked ever since. The sensor is a little bit shorter so the light comes on a little sooner
