Default Step by step guide to ignition timing?

Can anyone lay it out straight for me, I have access to a timing gun but haven't done it for at least ten years.
Have done a search but couldn't find anything useful.
Cheers, Raz

Very simple, visually the same principle as your S13 on the bottom pulley:

Undo a 10mm bolt locking the distributor and move it to the left to retard it or to the right to advance it.

15 deg's BTDC

Hey all.....sorry for the threadromancy, but i have a quick timing related question.

I picked up an s12 auto at the weekend and it was having running problems....not helped by the dizzy being loose!

Obviously,i need to set the timing,so....Is it set using no1 or no4 on firing stroke? I've had a look in the manual, but it didn't seem to say...

Cheers..

You'd typically use no.1 but 4 will do the same

Actually, that has just dawned on me that it's the same thing.....The reason i ask is,i cannot see my timing mark under the strobe using no1 but i can using no4 and it's vexed me a little. The strobe is flashing too

Unless it was picking up a signal from another lead i guess....

Thanks anyway.
