blown turbo

i think i might have blown the turbo today as my s12 is not taxed or tested i just pull it out from the garage and start it and admire the car and plan a few bits on what i want to do and imagine the finish article well on this event i realised some smoke from the zorst (clear) so i let the the car warm up an decided to tap the gas then smoke galore (white) does it mean the turbo is gone im not worried as a turbo was always on my shopping list it just means that the s12 has been delayed of its release date back to the cell till the next parole date any advice on turbos and what to pay as ive never had to deal with blown turbos before until now

PukkaSilvia 19-08-2006 22:56

Could it not just be condensation and from sitting for a while not being used much?

:(

FLEXXX 20-08-2006 00:20

well that was my initial thought will have to see what i make of it in the morning fingers crossed

indecisive 20-08-2006 08:56

doesn't white smoke mean you're running rich?

Jeff 20-08-2006 11:22

White = water = more likey head gasket that turbo I'd have thought :(

Or, being more optimistic, may just have been a lot of condensation from sitting for a while as Pukka said. Check for mayo in the rad cap and maybe do a compression test.

ianv72 20-08-2006 18:00

sorry to hear that flexxx , hope everything goes well :o

FLEXXX 20-08-2006 22:12

no mayo around the oil cap as that was the first thing i checked before buying the car i think it might be as pukka said condensation will let you know as soon as its a hectic month

PukkaSilvia 20-08-2006 22:26

Have you done anything to the engine since you have bought the car?

FLEXXX 21-08-2006 19:45

no nothing its been parked up since ive got it all i do is start it up every other day just warm it up as im just waitng for some cash so i can order the springs so i can fit the new kyb shocks and grooved discs at the same time will start the car up later this evening and report back on the level of smoke i did realise a small hole from the rear of the exhaust smaller than a 5p piece

FLEXXX 22-08-2006 13:43

ok ive just took off the pipe between the throttle body and turbo on the turbo end there was a small oil puddle in the orange rubber neck is this normal or not as for tghe white smoke it is still there i will get some more fuel and some redex and see what happens as it has been parked up for 6yrs or so apart from that all is well it starts first time the interior is mintas is the body everything is in good order apart from this but youd expect a few bits :)

How much power are you aiming for?

Redon 01-09-2006 19:36

Smoke

It might be the thin pipe is cracked. Its a pig to replace. Very difficulyt to get at. It driops oil on to the hot manifold and makes smoke. My mechanic made a new (colied) pipe and fitted it. Mind you, my turbos just started sounding like a fighter jet on take off...high pitched whistle.....?

Redon 01-09-2006 19:40

Thanks.

Can I adjust the clutch on the S12. My garage says I can't. New clutch and labour estimate £360!

roughly 210/250 bhp @ flywheel at the moment but i would like to have a lag free turbo as i love the power to be earlier on the rev range

will this fit and is it any good on a s12 with std internals and ss zorst, air filter, fmic not forgetting better clutch etc

s13eater 02-09-2006 09:16

looking at the size of the housings, i'd say it would be to big,my t34 has smaller housings, mines a 58 and a 50, so on s12 managment i'd say to big mate.

FLEXXX 02-09-2006 15:40

cheers mate im just planning ahead at the mo will get the car checked out soon just been really busy with job hunting and family commitments will be ordering the springs soon hopefuly so that will finish off all the parts needed for the suspension and brakes department which will then be fitted at the same time when i save up even more dough for ic and turbo parts are building up slowly but surely
