LSD 300zx
Hey guys,
I'm looking for a limited slip diff. I know the s13 lsd can be used but they are pretty hard to find over here. I read that a 300zx z31 lsd diff can be used, but i don't know if this is true? I know a z31 diff for sale so maybe i can measure it and see if it can work. Do you know other diffs then a s13 diff that can be fitted on a s12? Thanks!! Frank |
make sure its a lsd , i know we never got the lsd on the z31.
|
Thanks that's a good tip, i don't have to search for a z31 lsd more.
Do you know other cars which have a lsd and it can be used with little modifications on the s12? |
wots it like for drugs over there frank, i can talk to you can't i ;) FRANK.

Drugs??:p I was talking about the mechanical and not about the chemical hahaha:D ;)

lol:D

Im thinking of an lsd posibility. So if an s13 lsd fits, and an s14 lsd fits s13, this must mean that an s14 lsd fits s12, right? These aint so terribly hard to find here, so would be an option if they fit ofcourse.

I read the LSD threads on the other forum, thanks for the info 30psi!:D
Don't know if i have understand it correctly, you need: - s13 lsd diff internals - short s12 shaft from left side(so need to buy a second one from scapyard, or make it shorter) - s13 vlsd right input shaft - s12 output shaft left - "machined like the s13 vlsd input shaft" Does this mean that you have to fabricate it to the same shape as the s13 input shaft? I don't really understand this:confused: And that's all that's neaded right? Please correct me if i'm wrong:) Is it by the way hard to change the s13 internals to the s12 diff casing? |
You need to install the S13 unit with the S12 ring gear in the case. This has to be done perfectly, and is best to be organised.
The Left shaft is fine, it just needs a little bit of grinding to make it similar to the S13 inner shaft for that side. You need the S13 RHS inner shaft, and related 6 bolt CV housing. You get your 2nd LHS shaft and remove the inner CV, and fit the S13 one. Then you bolt the 6 bolt inner to this. |
I remeber hearing something about the Subaru Legacy's lsd fitting the S12? I'm not sure which year(most likely the same years as the S12). Is that true? Hope I could be some help.

There are 2 types of Subaru diff. The R160 and the R180.
Both will bolt to the s12 cross member, but the hardest issue is the shafts. I have an R160 diff at home, and the shafts are thinner and use a smaller CV design, so it would require some pro work to match the shafts. The shafts would definitely need to be longer due to the narrower case. Not sure what shafts the R180 has, but if they were the same as the S12, then it would be safe to assume the shafts would be easier to match. You also need to consider that the R160 diff is only designed for 100bhp at the rear wheels. The R180 was fitted to the more powerful models like the 22B with a mechanical LSD not viscous. This may well handle the power though. |
What about the Z32 LSD? Is it VLSD or clutch-type? I assume it's also a R200, right? Or is there too much crap going on with the axles?

But in answer to your question a Z32 TT diff won't fit. Its an R230. The Z32 NA one would be useable as its an R200. You'd need the shafts as well. |
yeahh:D ok now i understand, thanks!! I think i'm going to search for a s13 lsd diff and try the conversion.
Is there a way you can see you are dealing with a lsd diff instead of a normal diff with the s13? |
Well you have to look hard for this sticker on the left hand side of the diff:

Coming back to s13/s14 vlsd. So to make the conversation will the s14 shaft and etc. fit? Or will i need another s13 diff, for the few internal parts?
And i supose ten subaru r180 diff would be next to imposible to find |
No just use the S14 shafts, and internals.
The R180 diff is probably easy to get. But its probably harder to deal with the shafts. Also, you'd need to check the ratio of this diff. |
