which lsd to buy?

does anybody know is it possible to buy an off the shelf lsd that will fit straight into an s12 without loads of mods?

JackieFan 12-05-2008 09:05

Nothings been confirmed as far as I know but I think S13 LSD's for the Pre-facelift model should work with minimal modifications and I'm pretty sure someone is running an S14 diff, again, with limited mods/scavenging required.

I've been trying to get hold of some output shafts to compare them with standard S12 ones, but no one's been willing to part with any when I've asked around :(

chrismisk 12-05-2008 17:20

I think an s13 one should because my s12 came with s13 driveshafts on it

JackieFan 12-05-2008 17:57

Arn't S13 driveshafts are to long? Might have the S13 output shafts and S13 CV joints on S12 shafts though, that's not a huge amount of work and is what I was trying to look into but couldn't find any output shafts :(

Don't really no the fella i bought it off said they were s13 shafts cause he was goin 2 put a s13 lsd in it to put it on the road

30psi 13-05-2008 14:54

I doubt highly you will have S13 shafts

chrismisk 13-05-2008 17:27

Yea i really don't know i'm just goin on what i was told when i bought the car and wouldn't know enough about them to say any different

s14 diff fits handy enough into s12 casing. just swap crown wheel and put back in. shafts are another story. theres one s12 shaft shorter than the other. can't remember which side it is though. anyway you need 2 short s12 shafts s13/14 diff and inner drives. the left hand s12 shaft needs to be shortened to avoid shuddering. little time comsuming but worth it if you want a bit of sideways action

Someone tried fitting an S14a diff and found the shafts to be thicker. So therefore they couldn't grind the S12 shaft shorter as it didn't have the required girth.

i've read somewhere that an s15 helical will fit if you have the six bolt output shafts.Has nobody tried fitting 1?I've had enough of spinning 1 wheel!

s13eater 15-05-2008 12:44

left hand shafts are the shorter ones duncan:) .

S13 diff and shafts?

I have sourced an 1989 S13 Diff from a 1.8 CA18DET and the drive shafts. There seems to be alot of people saying so many different things about what to fit and what will or won't work. Has anyone actually done this conversion and can confirm what you need to do? I am going to have a go starting in a fortnight and will submit the progress. I have a 1989 G reg S12 1.8 turbo. The diff and shafts are from a 1989 200sx CA18DET, I hope there isn't too much trauma  but I'll give it a go. Any genuine input would be greatly appreciated.

s13eater 10-08-2008 15:28

me and 30psi have done the conversion before.:)

Yeah I did it a few years ago and worked out the parts that you need.

The only bit of the S13 shafts you can use is the driver side inner shaft (just the bit that goes in the diff) and the CV joint that bolts to this. You'll need the other side shaft but to look at because you need to grind a passenger side shaft end to be identical to this and then fit a snap ring. Then you need another passenger shaft to put on the drivers side with the S13 CV joint and inner shaft.

Do a search though this has been covered before and there's even diagrams on what to do
