engine smoke-turbo i think

another prob is i'm getting a little smoke from the motor a grey blue colour

symptems

when generally drving around town & hard accelleration its fine with no smoke

it just smokes a bit when i come to a set of traffic lights or on tickover when warm

my suspisiton is the oil seals in the turbo are going/gone

i've compression checked the motor & alls good, rolling roaded it & all fine

just tickover smoke?

irish s12 26-07-2010 21:49

Deffo the turbo I'm afraid:(

s12-newbie 27-07-2010 10:24

one else thing the same as me & irish s12

to be honest i dont mind if its the turbo as i'd upgrade to a t25/t28

anyone got any turbo recomendations?

i still have a saab/volvo intercooler i need to put on so if i complement it with a nice turbo to match

northerner 27-07-2010 10:36

if its happening when you lift off it could be turbo or valve stem seals. They are the cheapest to replace whilst the head is on, if its an ET that is. Is there any play in the turbo ?

s12-newbie 27-07-2010 17:13

it dont smoke when i lift of the throttle you can gun the car up or down the gears with no smoke!

it smokes just on tickover or on starup when its been run, my MOT man ha let me go on it for 2 years on the smoke test
my emisions are fine though! lol

i presume cause it only smokes on tickover or startup when the car is warm its just oil from the turbo getting burnt in the exhaust

lewt me know ya thoughts

No it wont fit,and it will last about a week.Don't buy anything that isn't a genuine garrett t25 or t28

The t25 and the t28 aren't direct fit,you will need to modify your intercooler pipes and the t28 needs an adapter for the air inlet on the compressor side.
They all have slightly different exhaust housings as well.
The t25 would be the easiest fitting turbo and definitely is better than the original t2.

can i put my t2 cast exhaust elbow on a t25?

i'm after the closest thing to a bolt on swap out! my s12 is my daily so 'll need to have it fitted & working within a weekend

modding my intercooler pipes is no probs just the turbo is the worrying part!

i have a t25 off a rover it boosts & does'nt smoke for defo but it does have shaft play so i doubt how long it would last once fitted if its a more or less direct ish fit?

what about a t25 off a ca18DET?

let me "the clueless" know! :OP

That sounds just like mine was, new set of valve stem seals, all sorted.

when the thurbo goes, normally you get smoke on overun, when you lift off the throttle.

You can fit it without using all of the elbow bolts,as the t20 has 4 bolts and the t25 has 5 it will work ok though provided you have an original nissan gasket.
I cant talk about the rover 1 as they are all extinct so I never see them any more, but the det 1 will work fine.

if it is the valve stem oil seals where do i get those seal will my local place that sells pistons, timing belts etc etc have them?

is it much of a job to do the valve stem oil seals with the head on?

how do i compress the valve springs to get the collets off?

irish s12 31-07-2010 23:58

If it is happening when the car is left idling for 5 minutes or so then it isn't the stem seals,it's the turbo.
If it's the stem seals then it will blow smoke whenever it has oil pressure, where as the turbo will blow smoke once the exhaust gets hot enough to burn the oil.
Engines can do weird things from time to time, but I have seen a whole lot of cars that have exactly the symptoms you describe in your first post that have knackered turbo seals.
I would say that you 100% need a new turbo tbh.

I've rebuilt turbos before with good success, but they are fiddly to do and you have to get them balanced afterwards.
