turbo chatter

how do i get my silvia to chatter, i love the chatter sound

adzs12 31-10-2005 08:15

I can only tell you the way mine used to chatter although it wasnt that loud.

Are you using a dump valve at present?

s12Rob 31-10-2005 08:37

nope im not

You need an aftermarket air filter, as a standard one will suppress the noise.

Turbo chatter is when the volume of compressed air forces its way back through the turbo (the wrong way). The turbo slows down loads when this happens and the noise is the chopping of the air coming back out.

On the standard pipe from turbo to throttle body there is very little volume there so the sound is hardly audible as there isnt much air to go back through the turbo. If you intercool it you are multiplying the volume and then you'll get a good chatter. The larger the turbo the better the longer the chatter lasts. This actually causes harm to the turbo by stressing the shaft as it slows down and may even almost go backwards. The reason why a dumpvalve is used is to reduce the back pressure on the turbo and therefore reducing the stress on it. Ideally you want a dump valve that only goes off on full boost, so an adjustable on is ideal, as I personally don't like the essex sound of a dump valve.

Take it from that mate;)

same as rally cars chatter.......

but they make a kind of skittle ing sound , usually un decelleration into the corners when they are shifting through the gears

30psi 03-11-2005 23:21

Thats the sound of anti-lag...

E11 04-11-2005 12:59

yeh ASL thought so...

wacomuk 04-11-2005 16:09

the chatter will be louder if you if an IC

doski 04-11-2005 17:47

chatter

yea the chattering sound is the sound of the turbo goin into reverse but they can afford to rebuild it after every couple of rallies to repair the damage

30psi 04-11-2005 18:20

On a rally car the turbo don't go in reverse. They have antilag which keeps the turbo spinning at full speed. Thats why they last 10 miles. They glow white as they're on full spin for so long.

Anti lag is done by seriously retarding the timing and injector a load of fuel so that it burns inside the turbo...

E11 04-11-2005 18:37

yea i was going to say that rally cars turbo's don't go in reversen that would completely defeat the object of anti lag

yeh als alters the ecu settings to fire fuel down the hot manafold on the exhaust stroke ( hot fuel hitting hot manafold ,igniting , spiining turbo faster on decelleration, ready for acceleration , fast skittle sound > turbo simple

dear o dear im drubnk!?

wish i could remember!

Excite 13-11-2006 23:21

the chattering sound is the metal flap on the turbo right.....when the air is coming out. im sure thats right.

thats what we were told when a mates cossie was set up.

he he....every ones knows different :trout :furious :D

30psi 14-11-2006 09:01

No its the air stalling the compressor blades. As basically the compressed charge reverses back out of the turbo.

It causes stress on the shaft as a result. I personally wouldnt bother with a dump valve under 20psi. There arent many on the market which do a good job anyway, most are designed to be loud.

adzs12 14-11-2006 12:02

But the the dump valve also helps to prevent stress on the shaft i always thought:confused:

30psi 14-11-2006 12:41

Yeah but its not an issue unless you are running high boost like 20psi plus.

ONION 04-02-2007 21:42

this debate was had some time ago but i cant remember the company that tested it.
they took 2 cars, same setup, one with dv, one without.
and over a set period of time tested the turbos for wear etc.
both wore equally.

as martin says, was around 18-20psi plus that it became an issue due to the higher pressure.
but then this would then depend on the unit you are using as most uprated units can take more abuse than a factory standard unit anyway.

my old red one used to chatter well.
all i did was fit a k+n filter and upped the boost a bit.
