A grand should should get you a mint slightly modified example.
S12s come in surges. Sometimes theres a few nice ones about then a month later theres not any apart from autos or tatty ones. £600-800 pounds should buy you a standard manual mk2 s12 with decent bodywork,t+t and no mechanical problems For under 500 quid with t+t most require a fair amount of work
