sounds like possibly you had a short somewhere but you can only really take it out and start again now. check it works straight off the battery first once its removed.
Check your voltage to the fuel pump aswell. The other possibility is that You may need to run a new feed to it and then use the existing wire to control a relay. Possibly your existing wiring just is not upto the job of a stronger pump. Some people have done this in the past.

The ECU actually powers up the pump, so yeah a relay would be a nice addition, it will probably run more pressure with a proper power feed to it. I wouldn't test it unless its in fuel, I've heard people doing this on 200SX and the pump cops out when its run with no load on it
