Might be a touch sticky-outy (so to speak heh) and will probably catch the arches on the rear. They also on the big side tbh. I would think smething like a 205/5516 will be somewhat stretched but do-able, a 225 would sit better but you'd need a very low profile. Something like 225/40 16 - not so cheap, more than most 17s. Only way to know is try it.
For the record 205/50 16 on a 7' rim is perfect for an S12.

I have 215 45 17 on mine with the suspension lowered with no clearance issues and no spacers needed.

Depends on how much power and torque you are trying to put down to be fair.
