Driving issue after fitting Walbro pump
So fitted a walbro 255lph fuel pump which I purchased from a HJC member a few weeks back. Now I have an issue with the acceleration. Best way I can describe it is that when im accelerating the pump isnt pumping smoothly its 'pulsing', making the car accelerate in what I can only describe as 'bursts', as though im pushing the peddal an inch down then stop, inch down then stop etc. This happens no matter how im driving be it slow cruising around town or under hard acceleration.
Before I say the pump is duff, can anyone suggest why this might be happening? Just incase ive missed something stupid. Thanks. |

Rite. Tried the hardwire, no difference. So took the pump assembly out and discovered what I think is causing the problem. Basicaly the pump filter gauze is possitioned differently on the Walbro than it is on the standard pump, the standard pump has a flat gauze where as the Walbro has a longer gauze angled at about a 45degree downward angle. Im guessing the s14a's had a deeper tank. So when I took the assembly out of the tank it was immediatley aparent that the gauze filter had been pinched at an angle beause it was hitting the bottom of the tank. So what I thinks happening is that the pump is sucking the fuel through the filter which because of the pinch is causing it so be sucked completley flat, blocking the flow into the pump, which in turn causes the engine to slow, which again in turn slows the pump allowing the pinch to relax a bit then the pump starts sucking harder and the whole process begins again.
So to cut a long story short the pump is no good for my car. Shame. Never mind.....anyone looking for a Walbro 255 for an S14a? :P |

won't it mount slightly higher matey ? won't the tube shorten a bit so that the pump sits slightly higher , i used a walbro from a gtir on my 8 valve with no probs, can't remember what angle the filter was at but i know it had one of those tea bag filters on.

Well ive now been told that the filter can be swapped for the standard item so going to give that a bash today. Failing that is there anything else that would cause these symptoms? The wiring looks ok but I might chuck an extra earth on just incase its not earthing properly.

ive no idea. Looking at the wiring theres one earth that bolts to the top of the whole assembly on the top as you look down at it and theres another which has 2 wires coming from the pump loom going into one which goes into the car loom. make sense?

Gave up and put the standard pump back on. It will have to do for now.
