Lightweight starter alternative
Me and Adz discovered yesterday that the s13 ca18det starter motor fits the s12 and is smaller and lighter. Im now using one rather than my old s12 one.

Yeah its almost essential I found to use one anyway on a DET, coz the starter touches a water pipe really hard, it breaks, leaks, and you get annoyed at the car

the should match the starter to the flywheel, the ring gear on the ET and DET flywheels is slightly different

Any ideas as to why it fitted on his old engine but not this one? Are the det`s different around that area in some way, such as that hard water pipe you mentioed?

I dont think so. I used s12 starter with a DET flywell. I had to because i used DET cranck on ET engine and everything worked just fine. |

Yeh so do I, but maybe they're only slightly different as he suggests.
Its probably down to how the gear box bolts to the engine, ie slightly play and also general tolerances, will make it different each time

don't know, never tried to fit an s12 starter to a DET. likely you had a jap engine before and a UK one now

I found it near impossible to fit the bolts into the motor, the reason being is biting the pipe. A quick angle grind sorted that out though
